Nog steeds sta ik ervan te kijken dat je als fanatieke breier regelmatig in de publiciteit verschijnt. Ga zitten breien in een café en hup, binnen de kortste keren heeft tenminste de lokale media je ontdekt en staat er een camera voor je neus.
It is hard to used to the fact that when you are a avid knitter, you get a lot of publicity. Just go to a café to knit and soon you will be discovered by at least the local media and a camera shows up in front of you.
De laatste tijd was het weer flink raak, ook in de kranten. Tijdens de Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam besteedde het AD maar liefst twee volle pagina’s aan de breitrend. Afgelopen vrijdag stond de Afstap uitgebreid in de Metro in het kader van het koude weer. Ik stond toevallig achter de toonbank en introduceerde daar spontaan een nieuwe term: ‘breierig’. Maar het grappigst vond ik het artikel in de Postimees, een Estlandse krant, die ik verleden week toegestuurd kreeg door Monika vanuit Tallinn. In juni breiden we mee met de WWKIP Day in een park in Tallinn. Een joekel van een foto plus een voor ons onleesbaar artikel verscheen pontifikaal op pagina 3. En nu maar hopen dat ik niets geks heb gezegd! 😉
Lately this was the case, also in the written media. During the Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam the AD (one of the most important papers in the Netherlands) filled two full pages to the knitting trend. Last Friday, when it snowed, the Afstap was the subject of an article in Metro (a free newspaper distributed in the public transportation). I happen to be behind the counter and introduced spontaneously a brandnew expression: ‘breierig’ (eager to knit…..). But the funniest was the artikel in Postimees, an Estonian newspaper, that Monika from Tallinn has send to me last week. In June we knitted along for WWKIP Day in a park in Tallinn. A huge photo of plus a artikel we can’t read appeared pontifical on page 3. Let’s hope I didn’t say anything silly! 😉
Nog een prachtboek uit Estland, over het textiele handwerk op het eiland Muhu, waar ik ongelooflijk blij mee ben. Het bijna drie kilo wegende lijvige werk van 400 pagina´s werd natuurlijk direct besteld door De Afstap en ging afgelopen donderdag vanzelfsprekend meteen mee naar huis met mij. Ik keek er al vanaf juni dit jaar naar uit dus een beetje sjouwen had ik daar wel voor over. Ach, al had ik ´m tussen mijn tanden mee moeten sleuren….. méé moest ´ie. Want het is zo’n geweldig boek, minstens een derde gaat over de tradtionele breisels, veelal wanten, handschoenen, gruwelijk mooie kousen, truien, mutsen enz. Maar ook alles over hoe de geborduurde schoenen worden gemaakt, de borduursels, het bandweven, gehaakte randen, traditionele kleding enz. Een schatkist tjokvol prachtige sfeervolle foto’s, patronen, tekeningen. Door het vele visuele materiaal is het feit dat het boek in het Ests is een minder groot bezwaar dan je zou verwachten. Ik geef jullie graag een voorproefje van dit boek, maar als je er iets uit wilt breien, dan kan je ´m bij De Afstap kopen voor 74,95 euro. Het is iedere euro waard. Dik!
Another great book from Estonia, about the textile crafts on the island Muhu, which makes me so happy. The weight is almost three kilos and it counts 400 pages, but of course De Afstap immediately ordered it the moment it was published. And of course I took one copy home with me right away. I was looking forward to this beauty since June, so carrying the heavy book home was not an issue. Actually, even if I had to carry it with my teeth, I would have done that too, as I really had to have it. It is a great book, at least one third is exclusively about traditional knitting, mostly mittens, gloves, terribly nice stockings, sweaters, vests, hats etc. But also about how the embroidered shoes are made, the embroidery, card weaving, crocheted lace borders, traditional clothing etc. A treasure chest stuffed with beautiful photos, patterns, drawings. As there is so much visueel material, the fact is the book is in Estonian language is not that important as you might expect. This is a preview into this great book, but if you want to knit something from it, you have to buy it at De Afstap for 74,95 euro. Worth every euro. You bet!
Eigenlijk ben ik niet zo van de beestjes breien, maar voor Estse beestjes maak ik een uitzondering. De traditionele motieven die erin worden verwerkt, maakt ze namelijk beeldschoon. Wie kan er nu toch een varkentje afwijzen als hij zo’n mooi Ests jasje aan heeft?
I’m not really into knitting animals, but for Estonian animal I make an exception. The traditional motifs that are used in the patterns, make them super cute. Who can deny a piglet that weares such a gorgeous Estonian coat?
Monika stuurde mij vanuit Estland het prachtige boek Kiri Kari. Al eerder kreeg ik van Wendel de Spin-Off Summer 2006, waarin Anu Kotli, die ook één van de auteurs is van Kiri Kari, vier patronen van sokkenbeesten publiceerde. Zeker met de Engelse tekst uit deze Spin-Off moet het wel lukken om een gezellig varkentje te breien deze Kerst.
Monika has send me this beautiful book named Kiri Kari. Some time ago Wendel gave me the Spin-Off Summer 2006, in which Any Kotli, also one of the authors of Kiri Kari, published four patterns for sock puppets. Combining the English text of this Spin-Off with the book it surely will be possible for me to knit a cosy little pig for Christmas.
Een paar weken geleden was CampusCam uit Utrecht te gast bij Stitch ‘n Bitch Utrecht. Journaliste Denise wilde wel eens proberen of ook zij kon leren breien, maar daar moet ze toch nog even verder op oefenen. Wat zij en cameraman Rob wél heel goed kunnen is leuke positieve reportages maken over breien!
A few weeks ago CampusCamfrom Utrecht visited Stitch ‘n Bitch Utrecht. Reporter Denise wanted to know if she could learn to knit, but it appears that she still needs some practice. But she and camera man Rob can report very positively about knitting!

Debbie Stoller begon ermee, Stitch ‘n Bitch, oftewel Breien en Beppen. Ze zocht op internet vrienden om mee te breien in het café in New York. In Nederland zijn er nu al meer dan 100 groepen. Twee jaar geleden ontmoette ik haar weer in New York en breide ik daar een avondje met haar mee bij de eerste Stitch ‘n Bitch in de West village. Ze schreef ook een paar boeken over dit fenomeen, met basic breitheorie en patronen erin. Maar nu is het tijd voor het échte werk, vond ze, en ze schreef Superstar Knitting. In dit boek legt ze wat lastiger technieken uit aan de inmiddels gevorderde breiers. Dubbelbreien, mooiere meerderingen en minderingen, Fair Isle en steeks, verkorte naalden en Stitch Witchery, zoals zij het uitdrukt. En ondanks dat ze ook een hoofdstuk wijdt aan het ontwerpen van je eigen patronen, voegt ze er nog 41 aan toe van allerlei ontwerpers. Eén daarvan ben ik.
Debbie Stoller started it, Stitch ‘n Bitch, or Knitting and Chatting. She searched the internet to find friends to knit with in a café in New York. In the Netherlands there are now more than 100 groups. Two years ago I met her again in New York and knitted together with her at the first Stitch ‘n Bitch the West village. She wrote a few books about the phenomenon, a bit of basic knitting knowledge and some patterns. But now it is time to get serious, so she wrote Superstar Knitting. In this book she explains the more complex techniques for the more experienced knitters. Double knitting, better increases and decreases, Fair Isle and steeks, short rows and Stich Witchery, as she named it. And even though she added a chapter explaining about designing your own stuff, she added 41 patterns from a variety of designers. One of them is me.
Arja doopte mijn van Noro Silk Garden gebreide rok ooit de Norok, maar Debbie koos voor de naam Dutch Touch. Het origineel is in paarsige tinten, maar de kleurtjes die ik uitzocht voor Debbie’s rok verbeelden de kleuren van Holland; blauwen van de lucht, groen van de weilanden. Deze winter ga ik mijn Norok weer wat meer dragen, want hij zit heerlijk. Laat de kou maar komen!
Arja named my skirt (Dutch: rok), knitted of Noro Silk Garden, the Norok, but Debbie choose the name Dutch Touch. The original is in purple colours, but the colours I selected for Debbie’s skirt resemble the colours of Holland; blue for the skies, green for the meadows. This winter I’m going to wear my skirt more often, it is so comfortable. Come on with the cold!
Tijdens de Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam in 2009 viel een blond meisje met een schattig Delfts blauw baretje behoorlijk op. Haar moeder Jolijn had de baret gebreid. “Waarom schrijf je daar niet een boek over?”, was onze vraag dus dat deed ze toen maar. Een jaar later zit ze gezellig met dochter en man naast ons bij het Dutch Knitting Café. Goed hè, van Jolijn.
During the Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam in 2009 a blond girl with a cute Delfts blue baret caught our eye. Her mother Jolijn had knitted it. “Why not write a book about this?”, was our question, so that was what she did. A year later we are sitting next to each other in The Dutch Knitting Café. Good for you Jolijn!
Het boekje is lekker praktisch. Er staan basispatronen in in twee maten, waar alle patronen naar verwijzen. Als je er één hebt gebreid, is de rest een eitje. Mijn favoriet is de baret met rode hartjes. Ik heb er al garen (Aslan Trends Sante Fe) voor gehaald in wolwit en rood. Nu nog snel breien voor het buiten kouder wordt.
The booklet is very practical. There are basic patterns in two sizes on which all patterns are based. When you knitted one baret, knitting other models is just easy. My favorite is the baret with the red hearts. The yarn I choose in wool white and red (Aslan Trends Sante Fe) is already there. Now let’s knit before it get’s colder.
Gelukkig had ik al snel een exemplaar bemachtigd, want Jolijn verkocht zo goed dat al na de eerste dag manlief naar uitgever Forte kon rijden om nog een paar dozen op te halen. Zondagmiddag waren ook die al weer op. Wie op de beurs geen boekje meer kon bemachtigen, kan je het boekje kopen of bestellen bij de Afstap voor maar 9,95 euro. Mijn boekje werd natuurlijk gesigneerd door de trotse auteur. Complimenten voor Jolijn en veel succes met Baretten Breien!
Luckily I got my copy right away, as Jolijn sold so well that after the first day her dear husband could drive to the publishing house Forte to get a few more boxes. Sunday afternoon those were sold too. Those that couldn’t buy a copy at the fair, you can buy the booklet at de Afstap for only 9,95 euros. My booklet was signed by the auther of course. De mensen, maar ook de hondjes, in Boedapest hadden het fris. Jan en ik waren een lang weekend in deze sprookjesachtig mooie stad, even een romantische uitje omdat we toch allebei vijf dagen geen verplichtingen hadden. Het oorspronkelijk plan Parijs werd geannuleerd en Boedapest geboekt, want wie flexibel is, kan zomaar opeens in Hongarije zitten.
The people, but also the dogs, in Budapest were a bit chilly. Jan and I were there for a long weekend in this city that could come straight from a fairytale book. We didn’t have any commitments for five days, so, why not do a romantisch trip. The original idea was to go to Paris and Budapest was booked. Those that are flexible can suddenly be in Hungary.
Nauwgesloten, net op de taille vallend, lekker tuttig en goed wasbaar. Dat waren een paar van de eisen die werden gesteld aan de truien, spencers en vesten die er moesten komen om de acteurs voor de musical Soldaat van Oranje te kleden. Catherine, één van de kleedsters vroeg mij mee te denken over hoe we dat het best konden aanpakken. Ik kwam met ideeën, patronen en praktische tips. Na een ochtend overleg tussen de rekken kleding in hun gigantische kledingmagazijn resulteerde dat in een stapel opdrachten voor de breiers van De Afstap in Amsterdam.
Close fitted, exactly on the waistline, frumpy and very washable. Those were a few of the requirements for the jumpers, vests and cardigans that had to be made to dress the actors of the musical Soldaat van Oranje. Catherine, one of the dressers asked me to think along with her about how to tackle this. I suggested ideas, patterns and practical tips. After a morning of discussion among the racks of clothing in their gigantic clothing depot this resulted in a stack of commissions for the knitters of De Afstap in Amsterdam.
Zondagavond zagen man Jan en ik het resultaat in levende lijve. In de hangaar van vliegveld Valkenburg bij Katwijk woonden we als genodigden een prachtige musical met vrolijke en droevige momenten bij, maar vooral met ontzettend mooie kleding. Natuurlijk kregen de truien mijn meeste aandacht. Jee, wat hebben onze Afstap-breiers het goed gedaan! Met sokkengaren op dunne breinaaldjes breiden ze ruim binnen de deadline een stapel van bijna tien stuks bij elkaar, plus een paar sokken. Petje af dames, goed gedaan!
Sunday evening husband Jan and I saw the result in person. In the hangar of Valkenburg Airport near Katwijk we were invited to see this beautiful musical with all its cheerful and sad moments, but especially with its fabulous clothing. Of course my attention was directed foremost at the jumpers. Wow, what a fantastic job our Afstap knitters did! With sock yarn on small needles they knitted a stack of almost ten pieces well within the deadline, plus a pair of socks. Our compliments ladies, well done!
Geen foto’s, dat was streng verboden tijdens de try-out, maar wel wat beelden van de boeken die dienden als inspiratie en de patronen die werden gebruikt voor de modellen. Sommige modellen komen uit Engelse boekjes en uit een decennia voor de jaren veertig, maar de mode veranderde toen minder snel en was stabieler dan nu. Zeker gedurende de schrale oorlogsjaren. Sokkenwol bleek perfect voor de meeste modellen, de juiste dikte, kleuren en goed wasbaar. Dat mag ook wel, want de sets veranderen doorlopend, men valt in het water en sjeest op motoren rond het toneel dat uit verschillende delen bestaat. Het moet tegen een stootje kunnen en dat kan Regia sokkenwol als de beste.
No photos, that was strictly forbidden during the try-out, but I do have some images of books that were used as inspiration and the patterns that were used for the designs. Some designs come from English books and one from an earlier decade than the forties, but in those days fashion did not change as fast and was more stable than nowadays. This was especially the case in the poor war years. Sock yarn appeared to be perfect for most designs, the right gauge, colours and it is very washable. And that was an important condition, for the sets change all the time, people fall into the water and drive around on motorbikes on the stage that is made up of different parts. It must be strong and that is what Regia sock yarn is.
Het toneel bestaat uit een hoofdtoneel met diverse zijtonelen. De gasten in de zaal draaien tijdens een prachtige multimediashow rond zodat er steeds een perfecte blik op het toneel is. In één van de laatste scenes draait de zaal 180 graden om z’n as, de deuren van de hangaar schuiven open, koude avondlucht stroomt binnen. Voor de ingang wordt een Dakota voorgereden, Wilhelmina in haar enorme sjuup stapt uit en jij als toeschouwer waant je in de wereld van 5 mei 1945. Maar ik keek het meest naar de leuke groene gebreide baret van één van de vrouwen. Wat leuk om hieraan een kleine bijdrage te hebben mogen leveren, dank je wel Catherine!
The stage consists of a main stage with several side stages. The audience is seated in a hall that turns during the fantastic multi-media show in order to give them a perfect view of the stage. In one of the last scenes the audience rotates 180 degrees on its axis, the doors of the hangar open and the cold night air streams in. A Dakota is driven up to the entrance, Wilhelmina gets out in her gigantic dress and the audience imagines itself in the world of 5 May 1945. But I was mainly interested in the green beret worn by one of the women. It was fun to have had the chance to make a small contribution to this musical, thank you Catherine!
