En, hoe vinden jullie ze geworden?
Vandaag is het de eerste echte winterse dag in Nederland, ik geniet van de kou en ben helemaal blij dat ik eindelijk mijn warme gebreide mutsen en handschoenen aan kan.

Today it is the first day that can be called a real winterday. I enjoy the cold and I’m so happy that I can finally wear my warm knitted hats and gloves.
Binnenkort is er iemand in mijn familie jarig die erop staat iets zelf gebreids van mij te ontvangen. Nou ja, okay dan maar. Ze waardeert het altijd zo, dus ik begin aan een paar Oh Lekker-kniertjes. Maar dan belt ze en stort een bak frustraties over me uit waar je helemaal niet Lekker van wordt. Het is niet goed of het deugt niet. En toen was het breien van die kniertjes opeens ook niet meer aan de orde. Wel al half af, dus over op plan B, handschoenen voor mijzelf!
Ik heb een patroontje uit Poetry in Stitches (duur maar gewéldig inspirerend boek!) gezocht. Het is het patroontje van de mouwtjes van het babytruitje, dat ik ooit breide voor Line, de pas geboren dochter van vrienden in Berlijn. Simpel steekje, maar erg mooi. En voor een Duits meisje van een Nederlandse vader is zo’n tulp best leuk.
Soon someone in my family has her birthday who insists on receiving a handknitted gift of me. Ah well, okay. She always appreciates my knitting labour, so I decided to knit her Oh Lekker-kniertjes. But then she calls me and expresses all her frustrations over her own life as if I did it all to her. Not. And from then on the knitting was as well frustrating to me. Half done, I turn to Plan B, gloves for me!
I took a stitchpattern from Poetry in Stitches (an expensive but wonderful and inspiring book!). It is the pattern from the baby sweater I once knitted, with the lovely cap, for a Line, the newly born daughter of friends in Berlin. Simple stitchpattern, but very cute. And for a German girl with a Dutch father is a tulip quite nice.
Handschoenen of wanten zonder vingers zijn onzettend praktisch. Melkboeren zijn daar al lang achter, vandaar de benaming ‘melkboerenhandschoenen’, maar ik draag zo ook graag in de auto of tijdens het winkelen. Doordat je ze niet uit hoeft te trekken bij bv afrekenen, raak je ze ook niet zo snel kwijt. Vandaar dat ik toen ik de Interweaver Knits winter 2006 opensloeg, meteen besloot de Wine and Roses-mitaines te breien. Eerst in de dunne rode alpaca van Drops.
Hoe noemen jullie ze trouwens? Mijn moeder noemde ze Kniertjes, naar Kniertje (Bep Nooij, begraven op Zorgvlied in Amsterdam) met haar pannetje soep uit ‘Op Hoop van Zegen’, een toneelstuk uit 1900, later verfilmd. Maar tot mijn verbazing staat Kniertje op alle foto’s die ik van haar vind, met blote handen…….
Dus eerst een paar in rode alpaca gebreid, een heerlijk klusje, dus daar bleef het niet bij……..
Gloves and mittens without fingers are very practical to wear. Milkman know that for ages, so in Holland they are also known as ‘melkboerenhandschoenen’ or ‘milkman’s gloves’, but I also like to wear them when I drive my car or go shopping. You don’t have to pull them off when you pay or so, which prevents from losing them. So when I saw the Wine and Roses-mitaines in the Interweave Knits winter 2006, I immediately decided to knit a pair. First in thin red alpaca from Drops.
How do you call them? My mother called them Kniertjes, after Kniertje (Bep Nooij, burried at Zorgvlied, Amsterdam), a poor old woman who got famous holding a pan with soup. She is a character from ‘Op Hoop van Zegen’, a famous play dating from 1900, lateron also a film. But strangely I only find photos of Kniertje with her hands bare……
Deze zijn gemaakt van Oh Lekker-mohair. Dit is kidmohair van hele jonge geitjes van de Klosse. De benaming ‘Oh Lekker’ is afkomstig van een extreem dikke vrouw die toen de haar hand tussen twee lagen versgebreide mohair hield helemaal verlekkerd uitriep: “Oooooh, lekker…….!”.
Ik heb trouwens bij het tweede paar een extra rijtje bobbeltjes gebreid ter hoogte van de pols. Dan worden ze iets langer, dat is mooier, vind ik. Zowel de alpaca als de Oh Lekker zijn gebreid op bamboe naalden van 2 mm. Dat maakt het weefsel compacter waardoor de motieven beter tot hun recht komen.
These are made of Oh Lekker-mohair. This kidmohair is from the very young goats of De Klosse. The name ‘Oh Lekker’ originates from a remark by an extremely fat woman who cried out “Ooooh lekker!” (“Ooooh nice!”) when she putted her hand between two layers of freshly knitted fabric. When I knitted the second pair I added an extra row of bubbles at the wrist. The mitaines are a bit longer then, I like that better. And I knitted the alpaca as well as the Oh Lekker on bamboo needles of 2 mm to make the fabric dense so the motives show up better.
Tijdens de Spindag 2006 in Elspeet kocht ik vier stukken kidmohairlont in fantastische kleuren: blauw-groen-turquoise. Het spon geweldig, lekker zacht en de vezeltjes hadden precies de goeie lengte. Inmiddels liggen er drie bolletjes op mijn vensterbank, één grote en twee kleinere, bijna 150 gram in totaal. Wat ervan te breien? Kniertjes (mitaines oftewel vingerloze wantjes), een muts of misschien polswarmers?
During the Spin Day 2006 in Elspeet I bought four pieces of kid mohair wool fibers in fantastic colors: blue-green-turquoise. It spun great, nice and soft and the fibers were just the right length. There are now three balls on my windowsill, one large and two smaller, almost 150 grams in total. What to knit from it? Mittens (mitaines or fingerless mittens), a hat or perhaps wrist warmers?
