Het breien van gecompliceerde kantpatronen kan best lastig zijn. In de jaren tachtig – pré-Stitch ‘n Bitch 😉 – heb ik mij nooit verdiept in hulpmiddelen die je werk kunnen vergemakkelijken, maar nu weet ik beter. Ik ben gek op stitchmarkers en alle andere handige kleurige hulpjes!

• Stitchmarkers, oftewel breibakens of steekmarkeringsringetjes. Je hebt ze simpel, zoals de rasta-elastiekjes van het Kruidvat, handige zoals de Cheerios van soepel rubber of prachtige zoals die met kraaltjes en bedeltjes.
• Stitchmarkers die je tijdelijk over je naald of aan een steek kan klikken. Handig voor het tellen van heel veel steken op je naald. Je groepeert de steken dan bv in groepen van 50 of 100 steken, telt ze en verwijdert de stitchmarkers.
• Lifelines, waarvoor ik quiltgarens of dunne gladde katoen gebruik. Je rijgt ze door je steken zoals deze op de naald staan, zodat je de steken zo weer op de naald zet als je in de toeren erna een fout maakt en uit moet halen.
• Leesplankjes oftewel regeltellers van metaal met magnetische strips.
• Doorzichtig Post-It plakband in felle kleurtjes.
• Plastic veiligheidsspelden van Clover om een bepaalde steek of toer in je breiwerk aan te geven of tijdelijk even wat steken op te zetten.

Knitting complicated lace patterns can be difficult. In the eighties – pre-Stitch ‘n Bitch 😉 – I never even thought about tools to make knitting easier, but now I know better. I love stitchmarkers and all other handy tools!

• Stitch markers. You can buy the very simple ones, like the little elastic bands for your hair, sold by your local drugstore or hairdresser, easy to use Cheerios made of smooth rubber or beautiful ones made with beads.
• Removable stitch markers that you can slip over your needle or click on your stitches. A great tool for counting large numbers of stitches on your needle. Just divide groups of 50 or 100 stitches and after counting remove them.
• Lifelines, I use sturdy quilting yarn or smooth cotton. Pull the thread through your stitches when they are on your needle. After making a mistake in the rows that follow, just undo your knitting and replace the stitches by picking them up from the lifeline.
• Metal plates with magnetic strips, I don’t know the English name for them. But they are great for indicating which row you are knitting.
• See through Post-It tape in bright colours.
• Plastic safety pins from Clover to mark a stitch or row in your knitting or to put some stitches on temporarely.

Op 9 juni wordt er wereldwijd geKIPt, oftewel, we doen aan Knitting in Publiek (Breien in het Openbaar). In Tilburg, Amsterdam en nog meer plaatsen in Nederland werd in winkels, op terrassen en zo gebreid. Maar omdat de uitverkoop van de Schapekop in Nieuwpoort vandaag startte, pasten wij ons WWKIP-Day-programma aan en KIPten we in Nieuwpoort op een terrasje in het centrum van het dorpje waar we bijna een botsingen veroorzaakten met onze breiende verschijning…….

Ja, ik weet dat het lijkt alsof er een portie friet uit mijn hoofd groeit. 😉

On June 9th knitters all over te world KIP, or do Knitting in Public. In Tilburg, Amsterdam and some other towns there is knitting in shops, in cafés and other places. But the sale started in the Schapekop in Nieuwpoort, so we made some adjustments to our WWKIP-Day program and did some KIPping on a terrace in the little town where we almost caused some car crashes…….

Yes, I know it looks like fries are growing on my head. 😉

Het is een warme zonnige dag en in de tuin staan drie spinnewielen klaar. Een paar kennissen komen namelijk bij mij spinnen leren. Dozen met schapenvachten, zakjes alpaca, sets met 12 verschillende wolsoorten en zijde zien er uitnodigend uit. Zelf krijg ik ook wel weer zin om wat te gaan spinnen, maar de eerste uren zullen de leerlingen me wel hard nodig hebben.
Eerst maar lekker aan de koffie verkeerd en de koffieleutjes!

It is a warm and sunny day and in the garden three spinningwheels are ready to use. Some acquintances are coming to me for a lesson in spinning. Boxes with sheepcoats, bags with alpaca, sets of 12 different kind of wool and silk invite us to try them. I get inspired to do some spinnning myself too, but I guess the pupils will need me the next hours. First ‘koffie verkeerd’ (coffee with lots of warm milk) and ‘koffieleutjes’ (cookies)!

Helaas, De Vlijt, het schattige winkeltje aan de Lijnmarkt in Utrecht dat sinds 1847 borduurspullen, wol en katoen, fournituren en nog veel meer verkocht, is sinds gisteren er niet meer. De eigenaren vonden dat het niet meer rendabel was de winkel voort te zetten en konden helaas niemand vinden die de vreselijk hoge huur wilde betalen. Hopelijk blijft het interieur gespaart en zal ook de mooie gevel zo blijven als dat hij nu is. Is het niet vreselijk dat zo’n mooi winkeltje na meer dan 150 jaar opgeheven wordt ivm economisch belang? Waarom stimuleert de gemeente niet dit soort kleinschalige winkeltjes blijft bestaan, het is immers zo goed voor het toerisme en aanzien van de oude stad.

Loop er nog eens langs en bekijk dan ook de granieten stoeptegels met naaigerei die in het plaveisel zijn verwerkt. Dat was het dan……..

Such a pity, De Vlijt, the cutest little shop on the Lijnmarkt in Utrecht that since 1847 sold embroidery stuff, wool, cotton, haberdashery and lots more, is since yesterday no longer there. The owners think it is no longer profitable to continue the shop and couldn’t find somebody able and willing to pay the incredible high rent. Hopefully the interior is saved and the lovely front of the house will stay as it is now. Isn’t it terrible that such a lovely shop after more than 150 years is stopped due to economical reasons? Why doesn’t the government stimulate the existence of little shops like this, it would be so good for the tourism and appearance of the old city.

Walk over the Lijnmarkt and check out the granite tiles in the pavement with sewing tools. That was it then……..

Sommigen zullen het best wel vreemd vinden, dat ik gisteren meer dan 400 km aflegde om drie wolwinkels te bezoeken. Kan best, maar ik had weer een topdag!

Eerst naar het Stookhok in Alteveer bij Stadskanaal. Brigitte heeft haar grote boerderij en schuren vol met wol gepropt en het is daar dan ook avontuurlijk winkelen. Uit de schappen komen de meest wonderlijke wolletjes.

Daarna stond Cordi in Groningen op het programma. Het was een tip van Saartje om daar eens te gaan kijken. Ze had gelijk, naast veel quilt-stoffen hebben ze een prachtig assortiment garen die voornamelijk voor weven worden gebruikt, maar waar je vaak ook goed mee kan breien. De dunnere soorten zijn erg geschikt voor kantbreien en verkrijgbaar in veel kleuren. Daarnaast veel chenilles, linnen garens voor kantklossen of heel fijne breirollen en de menggarens van Venne. Ook hier gingen we niet met lege handen weg……. Ik was erg weg van de stugge superdunne mohair die zo geschikt is voor eenvoudige ribbelbreisels voor shawls. De glanzende zeegroene linnen wordt misschien wel een topje.

Als laatste stond Finlandia op het programma. Via de afsluitdijk reden we van Friesland naar Noord-Holland. Het was al avond dat we er aankwamen in Bergen, maar Finlandia gooide graag haar deuren op voor vier kooplustige Stitch ‘n Bitch‘ers. Ik nam linnen garens mee voor nog wat kanten hoeden. Uiteindelijk moet ik iets met die kilo (!) stijfsel die ik verleden week bij Woortman op de Neude in Utrecht meenam……

Na ons klem gegeten te hebben bij een Chinees in Bergen, togen we huiswaarts. Het was weer een fijne dag.

Then we went to Cordi in Groningen. It was on Saartje‘s KnitBlog some weeks ago. She was right, besides a lot of quilt fabrics, they have a big collections of yarns that can be used for weaving, but also for knitting. The thinner yarns are suitable for lace knitting and are available in many colours. They also have a lot of chenille  linen yarns for lace making and knitting very fine samplers and threads that can be twined from Venne. We didn’t leave with our hands empty…….. I really loved the sturdy super thin mohair that is so suitable for knitting simple garter stitch shawls. The sea green linen might one day be a sleeveless sweater.

First the Stookhok in Alteveer near Stadskanaal. Brigitte has stuffed her big farmhouse and barns with wool and of course that guaranties a great shopping time. In the wool closets we found the most peculiar yarns. 

Some will think it is strange that I drove more than 400 kilometers yesterday to visit three yarn shops. That may be, but I had a great day!

At the end of the day we went to Finlandia. We drove over the afsluitdijk from Friesland to Noord-Holland. It was evening when we reached Bergen, but Finlandia didn’t mind opening her doors for four Stitch ‘n Bitch‘ers that wanted to buy yarn so badly. I bought some linen yarns for two more lace hats. Why would I have bought a kilo (!) starch last at Woortman on the Neude in Utrecht…….

And after eating a big meal at the Chinese restaurant in Bergen, we went home. It was another wonderful nice day.

In het Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam werd de afgelopen maanden de succesvolle tentoonstelling Pracht en Kraal gehouden tot en met afgelopen weekend. Ik ging er ook naartoe, met mijn schoolvriendinnetje van vroeger, Wanda, die eigenlijk ook Carla heet, maar ja, dat vond mijn moeder vroeger al lastig, dus het werd Wanda.

De tentoonstelling was veelzijdig, gevarieerd, compleet en mooi geëtaleerd in de grote ruimte op de eerste verdieping van het museum. Helaas niet al te veel breiwerk met kralen. Ik stond versteld van dit kleurrijke overzicht van kralen van over de hele wereld. Maar het hoogtepunt voor mij was de jurk van Marilyn Monroe die zij droeg in Some Like it Hot (helaas slechte kwaliteit foto).

Tijdens de koffie ging het licht uit in een groot deel van Amsterdam, letterlijk, een stroomstoring. Maar we mochten in het museum blijven en liepen door de duistere zalen en gangen alsof we er midden in de nacht waren.

We besloten de dag met een zonnige wandeling door Amsterdam en lekker bijkletsen in het Art Nouveau-hotel American, waar ooit Mata Hari, die danste in sluiers bezet met kralen, een van de vaste bezoekers was…….

In the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam the successful exhibition Pracht en Kraal was held until last weekend. I went to visit it, together with my school friend from so many years ago, Wanda, whose name is officially Carla too, but my mother thought that was not a good idea, two Carla’s, so she renamed her Wanda.

The exhibition was versatile, with lots of variation, complete and lovely laid out in the big space on the first floor of the museum. Not too much knitting with beads though. I was amazed to see this colorful overview of beads from over the world. But the highlight for me was the dress of Marilyn Monroe that she wore in Some Like it Hot (unfortunately bad quality photo).

During our coffee break the light went out in a big part of Amsterdam, caused by a power failure. But we were allowed to stay in the museum and walked through the spooky dark halls and corridors as if we were there in the middle of the night.

We had a sunny walk through Amsterdam and then went to the American, the Art Nouveau hotel where Mata Hari,, who danced in veils covered with beads, once was one of the regular guests……

Niet alles is altijd zo’n succes……..

Van Nancy Marchant leerde ik de techniek van de patentsteek. En natuurlijk moet zoiets vertaald worden naar een echt werkstuk, een baret van echte Rowan-wol in dit geval. Prachtig patroon, leuk en leerzaam om te maken ook. De baret werd prachtig, maar enkele maten te groot en vervilten in de wasmachine was de oplossing. Na drie wasbeurten was de baret inderdaad gekrompen tot de juiste maat. Bovendien was het contrast van de strepen iets terug gebracht, maar het model was eruit en Dana pikte ‘m meteen in als poezenbed.

Not all projects turn out to be a success…….

Nancy Marchant taught me how to do the Brioche stitch. And of course this new knowledge had to be put in a real project, a beret made from real Rowan-wool in this case. Wonderful pattern, nice to knit and very much to learn from. The beret was lovely, but some sizes too big and felting in the washing machine was the solution. After three washings the beret had indeed shrunk to my size. And the contrast of the stripes was reduced, but the model was gone and Dana immediately took the chance to make a catbed of it.

De Estlandse opzet bestaat steeds uit twee steken die samen aan de voorkant van het werk (figuur 7) een lusje vormen. Dit geeft vooral een mooi effect bij de boordsteek van twee recht / twee averecht.

Je start met het maken van een schuiflus, daarna maak je een opzetsteek zoals hieronder beschreven wordt, daarna een traditionele opzetsteek (continental cast-on) en vervolgens een opzetsteek de tweede steek.

Start dus nu met het maken van de schuiflus.

1. Hier zie je die schuiflus. De draad over de duim is het korte stukje draad, de draad om de wijsvinger komt van de bol.
2. Laat nu de lus om de duim los en steek je duim er andersom in.
3. Neem met de rechternaald het achterste stuk van de lus om je duim op.
4. Maak een steek door vervolgens het lusje om je wijsvinger op te nemen.
5. Trek de draden losjes aan.
6. Hier zie je het effect van de handelingen.
7. Op de voorkant van je werk zie je mooie lusjes die paren van twee steken vormen.

Maar je kan natuurlijk ook gewoon de video bekijken…….. 😉

The Estonian cast-on exists of two stitches that together form a horizontal loop on the front of the knitting (figure 7). This give a nice cast-on when you use a border stitch of knit two / purl two. 

You start with making a slipknot, then you make a cast-on stitch like described below, then a continental cast-on stitch  and than another stitch like the second stitch.

Start with making the slipknot.

1. Here you see the slipknot. The thread that is around your thumb is the short end, the thread around your indexfinger comes from the ball.
2. Now let the loop around your thumb loose and put your thumb in the other way around.
3. With your richt needle you scoop up the backloop around your thumb.
4. Make the stitch by scooping up the loop around your index finger. 
5. Thighten both pieces of thread loosely. 
6. This is what you get.
7. On the front of your knitting nice horizontal loops are to been seen. They form sets of two stitches.

But of course, you can also see the video…….. 😉

En als je dan een Yahoo-groep opricht over Knitting in Japan (inmiddels 611 leden!), dan wil je zelf natuurlijk ook weer eens iets proberen! In overleg met Hil (zie foto’s met grijs-witte handschoenen), die ook al niet te houwen was ;-), werden het de Herringbone Gloves van de site Tata Tatao, een gratis patroon van betoverend mooie handschoenen. Niet de makkelijkste, maar goed, niet alles wat je breit hoeft een no-brainer te zijn, toch?

Met de taal viel het mee. De vraag over wat de zwarte blokjes zijn (meerderingen), werd na een post met URGENT in het subject binnen een half uur beantwoord door leden van Knitting in Japan. En we werden op het goeie spoor gezet en ontdekten de mogelijkheden van vertaalsites als Google Translate en Babelfish. Stel je er niet te veel van voor, het blijft gokken wat ze bedoelen, maar het helpt wél!

Ik heb de Estlandse opzet (binnenkort uitleg over deze mooie opzet op LnK) gebruikt met daarna twee toeren boordsteek van twee recht / twee averecht. Dit voorkomt het krullen van het randje. De wol van Alice Starmore (2-ply in Kelpie en Mara) is ietsje aan de dikke kant, vandaar dat ik wat dunnere naalden gebruik (2 mm voor het boordje en 2,25 voor de rest). Het weefsel wordt zo wel heel mooi dicht en de patronen komen dan extra mooi uit. En ik houd van mooie dichte weefsels vanwege de vormvastheid.

Binnenkort komt er voor de Knitting in Japan-groep een KnitAlong. Ik ben benieuwd, maar eerst moet ik nog 200 posts lezen in de groep!

So when you start a Yahoo-group about Knitting in Japan (we have already 611 memebers!), you are extra inspired to knit something from a Japanese pattern yourself! After discussing about what to choose with Hil (see photos with grey-white gloves), who wanted to start right away too ;-), we decided to do the Herringbone Gloves from the site Tata Tatao, a free pattern describing real nice gloves. Not the easiest choice, but well, not all your knitting have to be no-brainers, isn’t it?

The language barrier was not too big. Our question about what the black squares represented (increases), was answered by members of Knitting in Japan within a 30 minits after our post with URGENT in the subject. And we were put with in the right direction and discovered the possibilities of translation sites like Google Translate and Babelfish. Don’t expect to much, it is still not always clear they mean, but well, it does help!

I used the Estonian cast-on (I will soon put the explanation of the nice cast-on on LnK) with a two knit / two purl border. This prevents a curling edge. The wool of Alice Starmore (2-ply in the colors Kelpie and Mara) is a bit thick, so I needed to use smaller needles (2 mm for the border and 2,25 mm for the rest). The fabric gets nice and thick knitting it like this and the patterns are visible well. And I love nice dense fabrics as they stay better in shape.

Soon we will start a KnitAlong in the Knitting in Japan-group too. I’m looking forward to it, but first I have to read about 200 messages posted in the group!

Eigenlijk is het weer te mooi om te bloggen, maar ik wil toch even pronken met mijn nieuwe wimpel, hier geshowed op een iets te klein koppie. Het patroon komt uit Knitting in America, maar ik het ‘m ietsje langer gemaakt.

Ook het schattige hemdje uit Lace Style vordert lekker. De 50% zijde / 50% merinowol van Verhijde Zijde is er erg geschikt voor. De kleur maakt dat het er echt ondergoed-achtig uitziet.

De Sampler CM is aan z’n 6de patroontje toe. Er zijn nu al bijna 850 breiers lid van deze groep! Knitting in Japan voldoet volgens de vele enthousiaste reacties echt aan een behoefte. Vanmorgen, twee dagen na de start, meldde zich al de 500ste breier aan. Er wordt druk gepost en links toegevoegd, dus het wordt wel wat met deze groep.

Om altijd iets om handen te hebben, heb ik besloten een lekker moeilijke shawl op te zetten met flinterdun garen op pennen 1,5 mm. Het is de kruising tussen een driehoekige en rechthoekige omslagdoek uit Gathering of Lace geworden. Het streven is om ‘m tegen de winter af te hebben, dus jullie horen hier nog meer over in de loop der tijd. Waarschijnlijk ook veel gezeur over de dunheid van het garen en de ingewikkeldheid van het patroon, ik zal proberen me in te houden…….

En terwijl het zonnetje lekker scheen schilderde man Jan in de tuin verder een zijn zesde icoon. Binnenkort zijn er een paar van zijn iconen te bewonderen in de Nicolaikerk in Utrecht.

Well, it is too nice weather to blog right now, but I want to show off my new wimple, here showed on a bit too small head. The pattern can be found in Knitting in America, but I made it a little longer.

The cute shirt is from Lace Style and I knitted almost both back parts. The 50% silk / 50% merino wool from Verhijde Zijde is very nice for it. The color emphizeses the fact that is designed like a piece of underwear.

The Sampler CM just had his sixth pattern uploaded. There are almost 850 knitters member of this group! Knitting in Japan is filling a cap too, many enthousiastic knitters let me know. This morning, two days after the start, the 500th knitter became a member. There is a lot of posting and a lot of links are being added, so I’m sure this will be a great success.

To have to knit something for the coming months I decided to take a very difficult pattern for a shawl and to knit it with super thin yarn and needles of 1,5 mm. It is a triagle mixed with a rectangle shawl from Gathering of Lace. I hope to finish it this winter, so I will keep you updated on the progress. Probably a lot of nagging about the thinness of the yarn and the complixity of the pattern too, but I promise to try to minimize that…….

And while the sun is shining husband Jan paints his sixth icon in the garden zesde icoon. Soon a few of his icons will be in the Nicolaikerk in Utrecht for an exposition.
