Wat maakt een Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag zo bijzonder? Natuurlijk was er veel te doen, hadden we geweldig leuke brei-VIPs en was de beurs onweerstaanbaar. Maar voor mij was de sfeer het belangrijkst. Al die vrolijke gezichten om me heen. Mensen die me aanschoten om te zeggen hoe fijn ze het hadden en mij achteraf lieve en enthousiaste mails stuurden. Onze buitenlandse gasten en zij die demonstraties gaven vonden het zo leuk dat zo veel mensen direct contact met hen zochten. Gewoon even een praatje, een boekje laten signeren of samen op de foto. Vrijwel de hele Dag was de breitafel goed bezet, had de beginnerscorner/kinderbreihoek het druk en zaten de mensen breiend op de tribunes van het podium. Dát is wat de SnB-Dag vooral zo geweldig maakte……. lekker samen breien!
What makes a Stitch ‘n Bitch-Day so special? Of course there is a lot to do, there were very nice knit-VIPs and the fair was irresistible. But for me the atmosphere was the most important. All these cheerful faces around me. People who told me at the spot that they enjoyed themselves that much and those that send me enthusiastic mails afterwards. Our foreign guests and those that did the demonstrations liked that so many of you make direct contact with them. Just a friendly talk, a book to sign or together on the photo. Almost non stop the knitting table was occupied, the beginnerscorner/children’s corner were busy and people knitted on the tribunes of the stage. Thát was what made the SnB-Day so special for me……. knitting together!
Op de valreep voltooide ik de MondNacht, twee dagen voor de Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag 2007. De donkerblauwe kanten stola kwam mooi uit op mijn roomwitte lange rok en shirt. Tijdens de SnB-Dag heb ik zoveel complimentjes gehad, dank jullie wel!
Het patroon van de MondNacht is te vinden in het Japanse breiboek New Style of Heirloom Knitting. De rand wordt eraan gebreid op de manier aangezet die al sinds eeuwen wordt gebruikt op oa de Shetland-eilanden. Na het breien van de onderrand volgt het lastigste deel met drie verschillende gecompliceerde kantpatronen. Hierna is het alleen nog even flink doorzetten, de rest van de stola is een repeterend patroon van twee waaiervormen. De stola wordt in twee delen gebreid en aan elkaar gemaast in het midden. Na het wegwerken van de losse draadjes houdt je een wollig frommelige lap in je handen die pas z’n schoonheid krijgt ná het blocken. Ons tweepersoonsbed was nét ruim genoeg.
De stola is gebreid van diepdonkerblauwe baby alpaca op Addi kantrondbreinaalden of 2,5 mm. Het garen is licht getwijnd en supersterk, wat handig is voor het blocken. De stola voelt er ondanks de open structuur lekker zwaar aan. En warm natuurlijk!
Wil je deze stola breien, maar heb je daar graag een beetje hulp bij? Wordt dan lid van de Yahoo-groep Knitting in Japan. Binnen deze groep leid ik de KnitAlong MondNacht. Er zijn ook diverse hulpdocumenten te vinden waarin precies wordt uitgelegd hoe de rand wordt aangebreid.
The stole is knitted of dark blue baby alpaca on Addi lace circulars of 2,5 mm. The yarn is lightly twined and super strong, what makes it very easy to block. The stole feels heavy despite its open structure. And warm of course!
The pattern of the MondNacht can be found in the Japanese knitting book New Style of Heirloom Knitting. The border is knitted on using a method that was used in the Shetland Islands for many centuries. After knitting the lower border the most difficult part with three different complicated lace patterns is knitted. After that you need a lot of perseverance, the rest of the stole is a repeating pattern of two fan forms. The stole is knitted in two parts and then attached to each other in the middle with the kitchener stitch. After weaving in the loose ends you end up with a messy piece of knitting that after blocking will look so good. Our double bed was just big enough.
In the nick of time I completed the MondNacht, two days before the Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag 2007. The dark blue lace stole stood out clearly to my cream white long skirt and shirt. During the SnB-Dag I got so many compliments, thanks to all!

Slechts zes dagen na de Nederlandse Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag stapten ik in het EasyJet vliegtuig om de Stitch ‘n Bitch-Day UK in Londen die werd georganiseerd door Gerard en Craig van IKnit London mee te maken. We wilden daar rondkijken en met de Engelse SnB’ers stitchen en bitchen in ons Dutch Knitting Cafe. Mijn koffer zat vol met Sinterklaastroep en -snoep en dozen stroopwafels.
Only six days after the Dutch Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag I took a EasyJet flight to be at the Stitch ‘n Bitch-Day UK in Londen that was organised by Gerard and Craig from IKnit London. We wanted to look around and stitch and bitch with the London knitters in our Dutch Knitting Cafe. My suitcase was stuffed with Sinterklaas junk and -sweets and boxes with stroopwafels.
We ontmoetten Gerard en Craig bij de IKnit-winkel en dronken daar een kopje thee, waarna we met Craig meegingen met hun huurbusje dwars door Londen naar het hotel waar de Day gehouden zou worden. Gewéldig om dit van zo dichtbij mee te maken! Na een zalig Indiaas buffet en de nacht doorgebracht te hebben in het appartement van Gerard en Craig waren we de volgende morgen voor dag en dauw paraat voor de Day! Met Craig haalden we Gerard op bij Water Aid waar hij met twee gigantische rollen River stond te wachten langs de weg. Bij aankomst zagen we Jantine al lopen met koffie voor iedereen. Brent kwam met de boot en had zijn prachtige gebreide deken voor zijn moeder meegesleept. Corrie had het vliegtuig genomen. Helaas, Nancy was geveld door griep. Wat een timing Nanc, volgende keer ben je er wél bij hoor!
We met Gerard and Craig in the IKnit shop, drunk a cup of tea and went with Craig and his hired bus through the center of London to the hotel where the Day would be next day. Gréat to by so much involved! After a nice Indian buffet and spending the night at Gerard and Craig’s appartment we went early next morning to the Day! With Craig we collected Gerard at Water Aid where he and to gigantic roles of River were waiting along the road. At arrival we already saw Jantine in the hall with a large tray with coffee for everyone. Brent took a nightboot and took his knitted blanket he made for his mother. Corrie took a plane. And unfortunately, Nan got flue at the last moment. Such a bad timing Nanc, next time you are thére, okay!cy
En wat was het een gewéldige Day…… van begin tot eind een doorslaand succes. Wat een supergoeie sfeer, overal breiende mensen, doorlopend leuke activiteiten, voorstellinkjes, ouderwetse muziek van de Shellac Sisters, een modeshow, diverse liefdadigheidskraampjes, knitting therapy, trunkshow van Jane Waller en overal blije breiers. De Dutch Knitting Cafe was vrijwel doorlopend vol met breiers en de stroopwafels vlogen weg. Aan het eind van de Day besloten hebben we met een paar nieuwe breivrienden, Corrie, Jantine, Mick, Brent en Debbie gezellig gegeten in een restaurantje in de buurt, waarna we Debbie, Brent uitgezwaaid hebben die samen de boot naar Nederland namen. We sloten de Day af met een glaasje bubbly waarmee we getoast hebben op de Day en zochten onze hotelkamer op. Tevreden, blij dat we ons plan om bij de Day te zijn doorgezet hadden en vastbesloten om alle leuke plannen voor onze breitoekomst die de afgelopen maanden in onze hoofden zijn ontstaan uit te voeren.
And what a day it was…… from the beginning to the end a great success. Such a good atmosphere, everywhere knitting people, all day long activities, performances, old fashioned music from the Shellac Sisters, a fashion parade, several charities to knit for, knitting therapy, a trunkshow from Jane Waller and everywhere happy knitters. The Dutch Knitting Cafe was almost all day long full of knitters and the stroopwafels were much appreciated. At the end of the Day we decided to have diner in a restaurant close to the hotel with a few of our new knitting friend, Corrie, Jantine, Mick, Brent and Debbie. After diner we said goodbye to Debbie and Brent. They took a boot together to the Netherlands. We had a last drink, toasted to the Day with some nice bubbly and called it a Day. Content, happy that we did go and confident that we must complete the wonderful plans we made last months for our future in knitting.

De volgende dag was er in het hotel een grote boekenbeurs in de ruimte waar we de vorige dag hadden gebreid. En ja hoor, ik scoorde er een paar schitterende oude breiboekjes!
The next Day there was a big bookfair in the hotel, in the place we had been knitting the day before. And yes! I found some extremely interesting old knitting books!
Lieve breivrienden die spontaan zich lieten overhalen om mee te gaan naar de Day, bedankt voor jullie gezelligheid en enthousiasme. Gerard en Craig, jullie hebben er een supergoeie Day van gemaakt, complimenten! Bedankt voor jullie gastvrijheid en tot volgend jaar! Beste Londense breiers, wat een topdag hè. Ik hoop dat je jullie beseffen wat Gerard, Craig en helpende familie en vrienden voor jullie gedaan hebben. Wees maar trots op zo’n geweldig breiduo en de IKnit-winkel en de geweldige dingen die ze doen voor de Londense breiwereld!

Wát een Dag gisteren! Van velen van jullie heb ik al gehoord dat jullie je uitstekend vermaakt hebben. Nogmaals dank voor alle complimenten voor de organisatie én voor de MondNacht. Dat deed me zo goed na een periode van hard werken én breien voor de Dag. Geweldig dat een aantal van jullie dit plotseling ontstane ‘gat’ voor de organisatie gedicht hebben door nog een extra handje hulp te bieden of Janet en mij een hart onder de riem te steken. Of door me spontaan een hartelijke knuffel te geven. Het was zo fijn om jullie allemaal weer te zien, wat hebben we toch veel vrienden in de breiwereld…… dank jullie wel! Ook dank aan onze brei-VIPs die door hun enthousiasme en inzet zo’n grote bijdrage geleverd hebben aan de Dag. Lieve Jean en Philips, Debbie, Kerstin en Nancy, we houden contact! Nu eerst de rommel hier opruimen, de foto’s bekijken, mijn Zweedse gast ophalen en alles nog eens de revue laten passeren. Later meer…….
What a day yesterday! I have heard from many of you that you had a great time. Thanks again for all the compliments for the organization and for the MondNacht. That did me so much good after a period of hard work and knitting for the Day. It was great that a number of you filled this suddenly created ‘gap’ for the organization by offering an extra helping hand or by giving Janet and me a pat on the back. Or by spontaneously giving me a big hug. It was so nice to see you all again, we have so many friends in the knitting world… thank you! Also thanks to our knitting VIPs who made such a great contribution to the Day through their enthusiasm and dedication. Dear Jean and Philips, Debbie, Kerstin and Nancy, we will keep in touch! Now first clean up the mess here, look at the photos, pick up my Swedish guest and review everything again. More later…
Morgen is het zover, de tweede Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag in Rotterdam. We zijn er helemaal klaar voor. Alle spullen staan klaar in en grote hoop midden in onze huiskamer, de MondNacht (nét af!) is keurig geblocked en gevouwen in een doos gestopt en ik hoor net van Janet dat ze haar sjoelbak gepoetst en gewreven in de auto heeft kunnen proppen.
Ik hebben mijn MondNacht af.
Nu jullie nog……. hebben jullie allemaal je breiwerk al in de tas? 😉

Tomorrow is the day of the second Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag in Rotterdam. We are ready for it. All stuff is piled up in our livingroom, the MondNacht (júst finished!) is blocked carefully en folded in a box. Janet cleaned and polished her sjoelbak (old fashioned Dutch game in which two meter long wooden box plays an important role……) and stuffed it in her car.
I have finished my MondNacht.
And you…… do you already put your knitting in your bag? 😉
Het duurt nu minder dan een week tot de tweede Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag in de Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek in Rotterdam!
De voorbereidingen zijn in volle gang. De laatste afspraken met de gasten worden gemaakt, de vrijwilligers krijgen de laatste instructies en ik bedenk alvast wat ik aan ga doen…….
Hebben jullie je al opgegeven voor de wedstrijd? We hebben leuke prijzen hoor, kijk maar op de Site van de Dag. Ook zijn er geen andere activiteiten op het moment van de wedstrijd, dus alle kans om te komen kijken, meedoen of stemmen. En op het Forum van de Dag kan je als voorpret kletsen in het Breicafé of andere breiers opzoeken om samen mee te reizen. Het volledige programma van de Dag staat inmiddels ook al op de site.

The last preparations are made. The arrangements with the guest are confirmed, the volunteers get the last instructions and I make up my mind what to wear……..

From now on, we don’t count the months, weeks or days, but the nights!
Jo An Luijken en Marlies Hoogland hebben samen een boek geschreven. Een vrolijk, kleurig en tóch degelijk sokkenboekje. Hoewel er de laatste jaren tig sokkenboeken geschreven zijn, springt deze eruit. Maar wat wil je dan ook; Jo An startte een paar jaar geleden de sokkenwolwinkel Wolhalla op internet vanuit haar eigen passie voor het breien van sokken en ze weet dan ook echt het naadje van de kous. In slechts 32 pagina’s lukt het ze om zowel het sokken breien in een modern jasje aan te prijzen, als de techniek duidelijk uit te leggen. Nog een paar erg mooie patroontjes maken het geheel af. Complimenten Wolhalla-dames, voor deze aanwinst in mijn breiboekenkast!
En je gelooft het niet, maar Sokken Brei Je Zo! kost maar 7, 95 euro…….
Jo An Luijken en Marlies Hoogland wrote a book together. A cheerful, colourful and even very thorough sock booklet. And even though last years a lot of sock books have been written, this one is special. And that couldn’t be anything else; Jo An started the sockwool shop Wolhalla on internet a few years ago because she just loved to knit socks herself and so she really knows what she is talking about. In only 32 pages they manage to knit socks in a contemporary way, but also to explain the techniques very clearly. Some nice patterns complete the book. Compliments to the Wolhalla-ladies, for this juwel in my knitting book closet!
And believe it or not, but Sokken Brei Je Zo! cost only 7.95 euro……..
Tijdens de drukke voorbereidingen voor de SnB-Dag kwam er nóg iets leuks op ons pad: de SnB-Day UK 2007. Gerard Allt en Graig Carruthers van IKnit London melden in hun nieuwsbrief dat zij in navolging van de SnB-Dag 2006 in Rotterdam op 10 november de SnB-Day UK houden in het Royal National Hotel in Bloomsburry, Londen. Een paar breiers uit Utrecht en Amsterdam willen daar natuurlijk best wel bij zijn. Het leek ons leuk om de Londense breiers iets te laten zien van het breien in Nederland in een gepaste omgeving; het Dutch Knitting Cafe. Inclusief stroopwafels en klompen. Mijn Pakkie An, het leuke en lekker hippe winkeltje uit Someren, wilde ook wel meewerken aan dit ludieke initiatief. Ze leveren allerlei lekker campy en super Hollandse spulletjes om het café de juiste uitstraling te geven.
Een EasyJetje was snel geboekt en toen Gerard ons logeerprobleem oploste door zijn wolwinkeltje aan te bieden als slaapplek, was alles geregeld. Op een bos plastic tulpen na…….
During the busy period organising the SnB-Dag there was more exciting news: The SnB-Day UK 2007. Gerard Allt and Graig Carruthers from IKnit London published the news in their newsletter that they followed the good example we made with our SnB-Dag 2006 in Rotterdam. On November 10th they organise the SnB-Day UK in the Royal National Hotel in Bloomsburry, London. A few knitters from Utrecht and Amsterdam want to part of it of course. And we thought it might be a nice idea to show the London knitters what knitting in the Netherlands is like in a suitable environment; the Dutch Knitting Cafe. Including stroopwafels and wooden shoes. Mijn Pakkie An, the funny and campy shop from Someren offered to cooperate. They loved the fun of this idea. They will provide us with campy and extremely Dutch stuff to give the cafe the right appearance.
An EasyJet flight was quickly booked and when Gerard solved our ‘where to stay’ problem by offering his small shop as a place to sleep, all arrangements were made. Except for a bunch of plastic tulips…….
Geer en Marja kwamen afgelopen zondag voor de workshop Twined Knitting helemaal uit de buurt van Zwolle. Op het moment dat ze De Afstap instapten, veranderden de twee dames in kinderen in een snoepwinkel. Ze gingen dan ook niet met lege handen naar huis……. Marja mailde me gisteren de resultaten van de cursus, het Twined Knitting buideltje was al half klaar!
Mijn enthousiasme voor Twined Knitting werkt trouwens erg aanstekelijk, merken ik. Helaas zijn de boeken over dit onderwerp meestal erg duur. Wie niet al te moeilijk doet over de taal waarin het boek geschreven is, wil misschien het Zweedse boek van Kerstin Jönsson over Twined Knitting aanschaffen. Kerstin zal op de SnB-Dag aanwezig zijn en ik kan haar natuurlijk vragen om een stapeltje boeken mee te nemen…… of dat lukt, dat is nog niet zeker, maar wie wil kan zich met een mailtje naar mij op een lijst laten zetten. En natuurlijk gaat het hier dan om gesigneerde exemplaren!
Ook de workshops Waaieropzet en Twined Knitting die ik donderdag in De Afstap gaf, waren erg gezellig en leerzaam voor de cursisten. Voor de snelste cursisten deed ik er ook nog wat mooie opzetjes bij. De juiste opzet is zó belangrijk voor mooi breiwerk!
‘s Avonds gaf Nancy Marchant een workshop over de Patentsteek. Corrie van SnB Utrecht en Gabrielle met haar breimaatje uit Arnhem deden hier graag aan mee. Vooraf hebben we z’n allen bij Foodism gegeten. Ze serveren er geen alcohol, maar we lagen toch al snel onder de tafel van het lachen. Lonneke viste om even voor de start van de workshop haar docent uit het eetcafé en ik besloot de avond met wat winkelen en een sprookjesachtige wandeling over de Amsterdamse grachten.
En ik ga door! Het succes van de workshops leverde via mond-op-mond reclame nu al een wachtlijst met gegadigden op. In ieder geval ga ik op zondag 9 december een volledig dagprogramma aanbieden. Last Sunday Geer and Marja travelled from Zwolle to Amsterdam to attend the workshop Twined Knitting. The moment they entered the De Afstap, they changed from ladies into children in a candy shop. Of course they didn’t leave the shop without buying some goodies……. Marja mailed me yesterday about the results of the workshop, the Twined Knitting pouch was almost ready!
My enthusiasm for Twined Knitting is catchy, I noticed. Unfortunately the books about this subject are often very expensive. Who doesn’t mind not being able to read all the text can purchase the Swedish book about the Twined Knitting written by Kerstin Jönsson. Kerstin will be present at the SnB-Day and I can ask her to bring some books…… It is not sure she is willing to do so, but who want to reserve a copy can mail me so I can put your name on a list. And of course these books all will be signed!
The workshops about the Waaieropzet and Twined Knitting I gave last Thursday in De Afstap, were so nice and the students learned a lot. For the fastest students I throw in some beautiful cast-ons. The right cast-on is só important for beautiful knitting!
That night Nancy Marchant gave a workshop about the Brioche Stitch. Corrie from SnB Utrecht and Gabrielle and her knitting mate from Arnhem loved to attend. Before the class we eat together at Foodism. They don’t serve alcohol, but we soon rolled over the floor with laughter. Lonneke came to the cafe to get Nancy just before the course started and I shopped a bit and strolled along the canals of Amsterdam as a wonderful finish of the day.
And I will go on! The success of the workshops attracted by mouth to mouth promotion already more students. I will offer a program for a whole day of knitting on December 9th. Het was zalig om weer eens voor de klas te staan. De laatste keer was in Groningen voor een groep netwerkbeheerders die alles wilden weten van het protocol TCP/IP. Nu in Amsterdam bij De Afstap, tussen de wol en het onderwerp was mijn geliefde Twined Knitting. Deze Scandinavische techniek is leuk om te gebruiken, maar levert ook wonderbaarlijk mooie en praktische breisels op.
Lonneke en Janny hebben voor de Feestweek de winkel van onder tot boven versierd. De bovenruimte was tot een gezellig leslokaal omgetoverd. De eerste helft van de middag hadden tien cursisten zich ingetekend voor Twined Knitting, maar omdat we voor de Waaieropzet maar drie cursisten hadden, stelden we voor dat ze een uurtje of twee konden bijboeken. Een aantal liet zich dat geen twee keer zeggen en bleef nog lekker even plakken om de puntjes op de i te zetten.
Het is iedereen gelukt om alle basissteken van Twined Knitting onder de knie te krijgen en een start te maken met het oefenbuideltje. Wie een lange rondbreinaald bij zich had of een Addi kantbreinaald van 100 cm aanschafte in de winkel (wat breien ze fijn hè!) leerde ook nog de mooie 8’jes-opzet er en passant even bij. Al onze boeken werden doorgesnuffeld en de voorbeelden goed bestudeerd. Heerlijk was dat, om al die enthousiaste breiers te zien vertrekken met nieuwe ideeën om het geleerde te gaan gebruiken. Geweldig dat jullie uit Zwolle en België zijn gekomen voor onze workshops!

En beste cursisten…… laten jullie nog even weten hoe het verder gaat?
It was so great to teach again. The last time it was in Groningen (North of the Netherlands) for a group of network managers who wanted to know everything about the protocol TCP/IP. Now in Amsterdam in De Afstap, between wool and with as the subject our beloved Twined Knitting. This Scandinavian technique is nice to use, but also gives you remarkable beautiful and practical knitwear.
Lonneke and Janny cheered up the shop with balloons. The room above the shop was made into a cosy classroom. The first half of the afternoon ten students came for Twined Knitting, but as the Waaieropzet had only three students, we suggested that they could stay for another two hours of Twined Knitting. A few liked that option a lot and stayed.
Everyone succeeded in learning the basics of Twined Knitting and starting a purse to try out the technique. Those who brought a long circular needle of bought an Addi kantbreinaald from at least 100 cm also learned how to do the figure 8 cast-on also. All our books were browsed through and the examples were studied in detail. We were delighted to see all these enthusiastic knitters leave full of new ideas to use what they learned. So great that you even came from Zwolle and even Belgium to attend our workshops!
