In het Atrium van het gemeentehuis van Den Haag was tot 29 december 2009 een kleine tentoonstelling van Estlandse wanten. Opvallend was het dunne garen waarmee sommige wanten waren gebreid. Wat veel steekjes om te breien! Maar dan heb je wel wat…….
In the Atrium of the town hall of Den Haag an small exposition about Estonian mittens was organized until 29 December 2009. Remarkeble was the thin yarn that was used to knit some of the mittens. So many stitches to knit! But the result is stunning……
“Brei iets leuks!”, zei een paar jaar geleden iemand tegen me, toen ik een opkikkertje nodig had. Ze had daar zelf ook wel eens profijt van gehad en dus nam ik haar advies ter harte toen het o zo hard nodig was. Zo breide ik me vier jaar geleden door het afscheid van mijn beste vriend heen, toen hij zijn leven afsloot op z’n 48ste verjaardag en een paar maanden later stierf. Ieder steekje hielp me een seconde verder door de tijd.
“Knit something cute!”, someone said to me a few years ago, when I needed some cheering up. She had benefitted from this idea too, so I took the advise to heart when I needed it so badly. Four years ago I knitted through the big goodbye to my best friend, when he finished his life on his 48th birthday and some died some months later. Every stitch helped me a step through time.
En nu heb ik de serotonine die de repeterende breibeweging opwekt, weer hard nodig. Nadat we afscheid moesten nemen van drie van onze vijf poezen in maar een half jaartje tijd en Coquette ziek is, brei ik weer iets leuks om door het verdriet en het gemis heen te komen. Life and knitting; alle ups en downs van het leven, brei ik tot wantjes, shawls en mutsen. In iedere steek een traan. Het project moet een hoog schattigheidsgehalte hebben, fluffy en zacht, kleurig, warm en niet te moeilijk zijn. Chocolade voor de geest, geen dag zonder breien, liefst met Coquette en Antie op schoot, die tot rust worden gebracht door het zachte geschommel en het getik van de naalden. Dag lieve Puppie, Dana en Peri……
And now I do need the serotonine that the repetetive knitting movement produces, again so badly. After saying goodbye from three of our five cats in only 6 months time and Coquette being sick, I knit something nice to get through the grief and feeling of missing them. Life and knitting; all ups and downs of life, I knit it all into mittens, shawls and hats. In every stitch a tear. The project has to be very cute, fluffy and soft, colourfull, warm and not too difficult to knit. Chocolate for the mind, not a day without knitting, which I love to share with Coquette and Antie on my lap, them getting relaxed by the soft movements and the sounds of ticking needles. Goodbye dear Puppie, Dana and Peri……
Wat je ver haalt, is lekker. Zo denken de Nederlanders er vaak over en dat is jammer want soms vind je de lekkerste hapjes in je eigen kikkerlandje. Zo gaat het ook met de beste breiers. Nancy Marchant, een Nederlandse breister van Amerikaanse afkomst, woont al ruim dertig jaar in het hart van Amsterdam, waar ze vroeger de mooiste breisels voor Ariadne produceerde en nu de prachtigste dingen doet met de Patentsteek. Oftewel, de Brioche stitch, wat haar de bijnaam Queen of Brioche opleverde. Wie kent niet haar website en Pecan Pie hat van Knitty?
All nice things come from a far place. That’s what the Dutch often think and that’s a pity because often the nicest things are found in our own tiny country. And that is also the case with the best knitters. Nancy Marchant, a Dutch knitter of American descent, has been living in the centre of Amsterdam for the last 30 years and used to make the most fabulous knitwear for Ariadne and now does the most fantastic things with the brioche stitch. This earned her the title of Queen of Brioche . Who doesn’t know her website and the Pecan Pie hat on Knitty?
Nancy heeft en kan het allemaal. Met een uitstekend technisch inzicht, vergaande grondigheid en een groot talent voor kleurgebruik en het ontwerpen van vorm, structuur en textuur, was zij de aangewezen persoon om hét boek over de Patentsteek te schrijven. En dat heeft ze, na lang aandringen,…… eindelijk gedaan! Gisteren stapte ze stralend van plezier De Afstap in met onder haar arm een gesigneerd boek voor mij.
Nancy has it all and knows how to do it. With an excellent technical knowledge, thoroughness and a great talent for the use of colour and designing form, structure and texture she was the ultimate person to write thé book on the Brioche Stitch. And she did so finally, after much persuasion! Yesterday she stepped into De Afstap, radiant with joy, with a signed book for me.
Aan mij hebben ze ‘s avonds weinig meer gehad. Ik kon niet wachten om de polswarmers waarvan Nancy me maanden geleden de originelen al liet zien, te breien. Eentje is er al af. En de tweede bijna. Ik heb bij De Afstap meteen mooie Rowan KidSilk Haze en Kid Classic meegenomen, want ik wilde direct beginnen! Heerlijk om dit fantastisch leuke patroon met dit mooie materiaal te breien. Verslavend, ik wil ze in álle kleuren en bij al mijn jassen en truien……
I wasn’t of much use anymore last night, for I couldn’t wait to start knitting a set of wrist warmers, of which Nancy showed me the originals some months ago. One is finished already. And the second one almost. I immediately bought some nice Kidsilk Haze and Kid Classic at De Afstap, because I wanted to start right away! Lovely to knit this fantastic pattern with these nice materials. And addictive, I want them in all colours to go with all my coats and sweaters……
Het boek start met een uitgebreid hoofdstuk met de uitleg over de Patentsteek, inclusief minderingen, meerderingen en meerkleurige breisels. Alles wordt duidelijk beschreven en toegelicht door middel van foto’s. Dat is ook wel nodig, want de afkortingen zijn heel anders dan je gewend bent. Schrik niet van bv ‘sl1yof’ of ‘brkyobrkyobrk’, want Nancy legt álles uit. Dan is er nog een hoofdstuk met maar liefst 60 stekenpatronen, de een nog mooier dan de ander. Wie meteen lekker aan de slag wil, kan een patroon uit het laatste deel van het boek kiezen. Er zijn wat kleinere projecten, bv een leuk mutsje of die polswarmers waar ik zo weg van ben, maar ook een aantal vesten en truien met mooie belijningen waar Nancy zo goed in is.
The book starts with an extensive chapter on the explanation of the Brioche Stitch, including decreasing, increasing and multicolour knitting. Everything is explained very clearly and illustrated with photos. That’s a must because the abbreviations are very different from what we are used to. So don’t be scared off by for example ‘sl1yof’or ‘brkyobrkyobrk’, for Nancy explains everything. Then there is another chapter with no less than 60 stitch patterns, one even more beautiful than the other. If you cannot wait to start a project, you can choose one of the patterns in the last part of the book. There are some smaller projects, for example a nice hat or the wrist warmers I love so much, but also a number of cardigans and sweaters with the lovely designs that Nancy is so good at.
En dan die namen van de patronen, gewéldig! Mutsje ‘Delft’s Blauw’, vest ‘Windmolen’, de ‘Waterlooplein Watch Cap’ en de ‘Zandloper’…… alles heeft een Nederlandse naam! Ik ben benieuwd hoe ze dat wereldwijd gaan uitspreken. 😉
And what about the names of the patterns, fantastic! Hat ‘Delft’s Blauw’, cardigan ‘Windmolen’, the ‘Waterlooplein Watch Cap’ and the ‘Zandloper’……everything has a Dutch name! I cannot wait to hear these names pronounced worldwide. 😉

Het boek is op dit moment nog niet verkrijgbaar in Nederland, maar kan wel al worden besteld. Natuurlijk krijgen we bij De Afstap binnenkort ook een stapel. Wees er snel bij, ik verwacht dat dit boek binnen de kortste keren uitverkocht is. En uiteindelijk wil je ‘m toch…….

Je zal als Amsterdamse wolwinkeleigenares van De Afstap toch maar eens dubbelop oma worden van een tweeling! Reden genoeg om in de pennen te klimmen en het mooie oude patroontje van baby booties uit Piecework September-Oktober 2009 te breien voor oma Lonnie. Natuurlijk met een Dutch Knitter’s touch in de vorm van een rood-wit-blauw bandje. Prinses Diana startte ooit met flagdressing om de relaties met het gastland te benadrukken, maar wij vinden dat je ook als Dutch Baby in de VS daar niet vroeg genoeg mee kan beginnen.
Imagine, being the owner of De Afstap, the yarn shop in Amsterdam, and becoming granny twice, a twin! Reason enough to fetch our needles and knit gran Lonnie the lovely old baby booties pattern from Piecework Sept-Oct 2009. Of course with a Dutch Knitters’ touch by means of a red-white-blue ribbon. Princess Diana once started flag-dressing to emphasize the relationship with the guest country, but we believe that also as a Dutch Baby in the US you cannot start this too soon.
Het garen, de sokkenwol met zijde van Regia, is sterk maar ook mooi en zacht. Romig wit is het traditioneelst en kleurt leuk bij het vlaggenbandje. Het rare vormloze lapje dat op maar twee pennen wordt gebreid, vouw je uiteindelijk tot een keurig slofje dat met één naadje wordt gesloten. Leuk om een keer te doen en in een uurtje of 5, 6 hadden we ieder een paartje gebreid. Even target-breien dus, maar zo waren ze nét op tijd af om aan Lon mee te geven die met een koffer vol cadeautjes naar haar zoon en schoondochter ging en amper nog een zwart verschoninkje mee kon nemen.
The yarn, Regia’s sock yarn with silk, is strong but also beautiful and soft. Off-white is the most traditional colour and it matches the flag ribbon nicely. The strange, shapeless piece of knitwork that’s knitted on two needles, eventually folds in to a pretty bootie that’s closed with only one seam. A nice project and in an hour or 5 or 6 we both had knitted a pair. A case of target knitting, but this way thet were finished just in time to hand them to Lon who went to her son and daughter-in-law with a suitcase full of gifts and therefore could scarcely take with her an extra black outfit.
Holland…… koude winters, schaatsen op het kanaal, koek en zopie, wanten aan en das tot aan je neus en de Friese Elfstedentocht. Dat is mijn beeld van de winters in mijn jeugd. Maar de klimaatverandering zorgt voor opwarming dus helaas breien we nu onze wanten meer voor de sier dan voor de kou. In 1963, toen ik één jaar oud was, hadden we echter nog een vreselijk koude winter. De winter dat de barre Elfstedentocht werd gereden, waarbij zoveel schaatsers afhaakten. Van die tocht is een film gemaakt: De Hel van ’63. En wij, man Jan en ik, waren erbij…… als figurant.
Holland…… cold winters, iceskating on the canal, cookies and hot chocolat, mittens and your scarf up your nose and the Elfstedentocht in Friesland (iceskating contest over eleven cities). But the climat change makes the earth warmer, so unfortunately we now knit our mittens more to show them of as for warmth. In 1962, when I was one year old, we had a extremely cold winter. The winter of the Elfstedentocht from hell, when so many skaters didn’t make it to the finish. From this event a film was made: De Hel van ’63. En we, husband Jan and I, were there…… as extras.
Moeder Mart tipte me dat er iets in de krant stond over de film en over dat er ouderwets gebreide mutsen en truien nodig waren. Een belletje naar omroep Fryslân leverde me meteen een gezellig radio-interview op over breien in de jaren zestig en een uitnodiging om mee te doen als figurant bij de opname in Dokkum. Man Jan leek het ook wel wat, dus ik zocht ouderwetse outfits voor ons beiden op – met veel gebreid spul natuurlijk – en zo gingen we op pad.
Mother Mart attended me on an article in the paper about the film and the fact that they needed old fashioned hats and sweaters. I called the radiostation Fryslân and they interviewed me about knitting in the sixties and an invitation to join the making of the film in Dokkum as an extra. Husband Jan liked that too, so I collected outfits from for the both of us – with lots of knitted items of course – and we went to Friesland.
De opnameplek in het nostalgische Dokkum was een plaatje. Jan en ik brachten de middag door in onze warme kleding en bespoten met nepsneeuw op een randje langs de haven waar de schaatsers op een soort van geïmproviseerd ijsbaantje aankwamen bij de controlepost. Aan de overkant was het zomer en zaten mensen in zomerse klediing op terrasjes het tafereel gade te slaan.
The place where they filmed the scene in nostalgic Dokkum was beautiful. Jan and I spent the afternoon in our warm clothes and with lots of sprayed on snow on a little wall of the harbour where the skaters arrived on an improvised frozen skating rink at the control station. At the other side of the canal people sat in summer wear on the terras watching the scenery.
Wij waren niet de enige figuranten die hun best hadden gedaan om er volgens de mode van 1963 uit zien. We zagen veel Grolse Wanten, prachtige oude Noorse truien en originele Friese schaatsmutsen. Maar met mijn plooirok, houtje-touwtje jas, Marken’s shawltje uit Ariadne, handschoenen, rode maillot en geitenwollen sokken in bontschoenen en de roomsoes van Elizabeth Zimmermann op mijn hoofd, kreeg ik menig complimentje. Of Jan en ik de camera hebben gehaald vanaf ons plekje op de kade weet ik niet. Maar de dag met de prachtige beelden van een vergane wereld, het grappige contrast tussen de zonnige kade en het winterse haventje en de overvloed aan inspirerende oude breisels maakte het de tocht naar het Noorden meer dan waard.
We weren’t not the only extras that tried to copy the fashion of 1963 the best they could. We saw a lot of Grolse Wanten (mittens from Groenlo), beautiful old Nordic sweaters and original sckating caps from Friesland. But with my pleaded skirt, Monty coat, shawl from Marken, gloves, red tights and goathair socks in fur lined shoes and the Snail Hat from Elizabeth Zimmermann on my head, I got lots of compliments. We don’t know if we are in the film or not. But the day with the wonderful images of a world of the past, the funny contrast between the sunny quay and the frozen harbour and the abundance of inspiring old knitwear, made the journey to the North worth it.
Het breiweekendje bij de Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden in Koewacht is iedere keer weer een belevenis. Het enthousiasme van de cursisten werkt aanstekelijk, dus ik gooi er graag nog een steekje bovenop. De eerste dag heb ik allerlei methodes om te kabelen uitgeprobeerd, de cursisten ondertussen waarschuwend voor dag twee: Estlands Kant. De dames namen mijn advies serieus en verschenen zondagmorgen weer fris en fruitig op het strijdtoneel. Want makkelijk, nee dat is het zeker niet, maar alle cursisten wisten uiteindelijk een deel van de rand aan het middenpaneel te bevestigen op traditionele wijze en stonden versteld van zichzelf.
The knitting weekends at Wolboerderij Blij Bezuiden Koewacht are always quite an experience. The students’ enthusiasm is contagious, so I love to cast on an extra stitch. The first day I experimented with all kinds of methods for cabling, in the meantime warning the students for day two: Estonian Lace. The ladies took us seriously and entered the arena hale and hearty. For easy, no that’s not what it is, but in the end all students surprised themselves by managing to sew on part of the lace edge to the centre panel in the traditional way.
Het tweezijdige kabeltje was weer een groot succes. Eenvoud gecombineerd met een sensationeel effect doet het altijd goed. Maar ook het oefenen van diverse manieren om kabelachtige effecten te bereiken, vonden de cursisten erg interessant. Bavarian knitting, waarmee je Oostenrijkse motieven kan maken, kabelen zonder kabelnaald, betere opzetten en afkantingen voor kabelwerk, het ging erin als koek. Buuf was al bij oefening 2 om voor de nieuwe en makkelijker technieken en baalde ervan dat ze nét een shawltje voor haar kleinkind af had dat ze met heel wat minder moeite had kunnen vervaardigen.
The reversible cable was a big success again. Simplicity combined with a sensational effect is always a winner. But also practising several ways of achieving cable-like effects were a success. Bavarian knitting, with which you can make Austrian motifs, cabling without cable needle, the proper cast-ons and cast-offs for cable knitting, they all went down very well. Buuf had already started assignment 2 for better and easier techniques and was cross that she had just finished a shawl for her grandchild that she could have made with a lot less effort.
Thea, de gastvrouw in het schattige pastoriepensionnetje onder de kerk in Heikant was blij haar breimeisje weer onderdak te bieden. Sindy, de kleurrijke pensiongenote die zo goed is in sokkenbreien én stoppen, nam de kamer van de kleinkinderen. Het uitgebreide ontbijt in de serrekamer smaakte weer prima. Waar vind je tegenwoordig nog zo’n geweldige B&B?
Thea, the host in the lovely rectory guesthouse next to the church in Heikant was happy to accommodate her knitting girl again. Sindy, the colourful co-guest, who is a star at sock knitting and mending, took the grandchildren’s room. The sumptuous breakfast in the room with conservatory was delicious as ever. Where can such a wonderful B&B be found these days?
De koffiekoeken van Jannie waren een traktatie, maar de plattelandse verhalen over vlees en hoe een lammetje een hammetje wordt, viel slecht bij mij. Ik hield het bij een plakje kaas een een tomaatje en ‘s avonds tijdens het gezellige etentje met Sindy, Jannie en Jean-Paul zat alleen Jean-Paul nog een aan een niet-vega gerecht.
Jannie’s coffee cakes were a treat, but all the country-life stories about meat and how a lamb becomes a ham, went down badly with me. I stuck to a slice of cheese and a tomato and at night during our cosy dinner with Sindy, Jannie and Jean-Paul only Jean-Paul had a non-veggie dish.
Buuf moest bijna het weekend missen toen ze zich buitensloot doordat ze de deurknop in haar hand hield, maar was verder weer op haar best en al mopperend schreef ze zich, samen met Sindy, alvast in voor het volgende breiweekend. Volgend jaar kom ik er natuurlijk weer en dan hoop ik maar op één ding……. iedere stamgast een traditionele Estlandse Haapsalu shawl om de schouders!
Buuf almost locked herself out, holding the door knob in her hands, but besides that small incident she was at her best again and although grumbling she signed up, together with Sindy, for the next knitting weekend. Of course I will be back next year and there’s one thing I sincerely hope … that every regular has a traditional Haapsalu shawl around her shoulders!
Soms het je opeens zin om met iets anders dan de wol van het vertrouwde schaap te breien. En dat kan nu. Garens worden niet alleen van schapenwol, katoen, zijde of linnen, ook van soja, melk, bamboe, alpaca, vicuña of muskusos gemaakt. Met qiviut oftewel de donzige buikwol van de muskusos, heb ik een baret gebreid. Het is een mengsel van 50% qiviut en 50% zijde en breit als een zonnetje. Het garen is met twee draadjes getwijnd en 175 meter per 50 gram dus je komt er een heel eind mee. Bij De Afstap kan je het kopen (2 of 3ply) voor maar 10,50 euro. Je kan daar ook Arctic Lace kopen, een boek vol met patronen speciaal voor het breien met qiviut.
Sometimes you suddenly have the urge to knit with something else as the usual sheep wool. And that is possible nowadays. Yarn can be made not only from sheep wool, cotton, silk or linnen, but also from soy, milk, bamboo, alpaca, vicuña or muskox. With qiviut, the down of the belly of the muskox, I have knitted a tam. It is a mix of 50% qiviut and 50% silk and it knits heavenly. The yarn is a 2ply and there is 175 meters on a 50 gram coon, so you can knit a lot from a little amount. At De Afstap you can buy it (2 or 3ply) for only 10,50 euros. You can also buy Arctic Lace there, a book stuffed with patterns especially designed to show of the qualities of the qiviut.
Het patroon van de baret, Qiviuk uit de Holiday Gifts van Interweave Knits 2007, bestaat uit kleine spinnetjes en een spinnenweb. Was het toeval of de invloed van de herfst dat ik eerder deze week de Spider van Barbara Walker breide? En dat voor iemand die als de dood is voor die griezels……
The pattern of the tam, Qiviuk from Holiday Gifts van Interweave Knits 2007, exist of little spiders and a spiderweb. Was it coincidence or the influence of autumn that earlier this week I have knitted the Spider from Barbara Walker? Not a usual choice for someone afraid of these scary insects……
Estland, een tijdje geleden wist ik nog niet eens waar het precies is, nu ben ik er bijna dagelijks mee bezig. Want ze hebben er een schatkist vol met grandioos mooi breiwerk. De wanten met de bijzondere opzetten en randjes, de inbreipatronen voor kousen, maar vooral het kantwerk zijn van enorm hoge kwaliteit en bevatten voor westerse breiers veel nieuwe elementen.
Estonia, a while ago I didn’t even know exactly where it is situated, now it’s on my mind almost every day. For the Estonians have a treasure chest full of gorgeous knitting. The mittens with the very special cast-ons and edges, the colour patterns for stockings, but especially the lace is of a very high quality and contains many new elements for the Western knitters.
Hoe het allemaal begon? Met een reprint van een ouderwets Estlands patronenboek. Een jaar of drie geleden bestelde ik voor circa 20 euro de nieuwste versie van Pitsilised Koekirjad en nam het mee naar Stitch ‘n Bitch Utrecht. Ze zagen me aankomen…… één blik op de gruwelijk gedateerde foto’s was voor de meesten genoeg, ze bladerden het boek vol afgrijzen door en legden het met een vies gezicht terug. En ik zat daar, enigszins gedesillusioneerd maar nog steeds overtuigd van de kwaliteiten van mijn boek, en maakte plannen om de patronen uit te proberen, wat de anderen er ook van vonden. Nu is Pitsilised Koekirjad vrijwel niet meer te vinden en gaat het op Ebay voor rond de 100 dollar van hand tot hand.
How did it all start? With a reprint of an old-fashioned Estonian pattern book. Some three years ago I ordered the latest version of Pitsilised Koekirjad for approx. 20 euros and brought it with me to Stitch ‘n Bitch Utrecht. They saw me coming…. one look at the awfully dated photos was enough for most of them, horrified they leafed through the book and put it back on the table with a disgusted look on their face. So there I was, somewhat disillusioned but still convinced of this book’s quality, and I made plans to try some patterns whatever the others thought of it. Now Pitsilised Koekirjad is very hard to find and is offered at E-bay for prices around 100 dollars.
Na dit boek volgden er veel. Dankzij mijn lieve Estlandse breivriendinnen ligt er nu een flinke stapel oude en nieuwe Estlandse boeken, waaronder het beeldschone Haapsalu Sall. Daaruit breide ik mijn eerste echt traditionele shawl met aangenaaide rand, helemaal zoals de Estlandse meesterbreiers het voorschrijven. En van het oorspronkelijk Estlandse garen. Makkelijk is het niet, maar dan maak je het wel volgens de traditie en dat vind ik belangrijk. Het middenpaneel is het stekenpatroon Karukellakirjad (anemoon Haapsalu Sall pag 77) en de rand een eenvoudige zigzag (Haapsalu Sall pag 181 onderaan).
After this book many more followed. Thanks to my dear Estonian knitting friends I now have quite a pile of old and new Estonian books, among which the beautiful Haapsalu Sall. From this book I knitted my first genuine traditional shawl with sewed-on edge, exactly the way the Estonian master knitters dictate it. And with the original Estonian yarn. It isn’t easy, but this is the way to do it traditionally and that’s important to me. The centre panel is stitch pattern Karukellakirjad (anemone Haapsalu Sall page 77) and the edge a simple zigzag (Haapsalu Sall page 181 at the bottom).
De workshops Estlands Kant zijn een groot succes. Afgelopen zaterdag leerden we Belgische cursisten in Leuven in ‘t Wolwinkeltje een minishawl breien. Zondag deden we dat nog eens in De Afstap in Amsterdam. Beide leverden voor iedere cursist met bloed, zweet en tranen (van het lachen overigens) een minishawl op, zodat ze nu hun eigen shawl kunnen breien. De reacties waren geweldig en hoe moe ze ook waren, alle cursisten gingen trots en enthousiast naar huis. We hebben ze maar snel ons Excel-spreadsheet gestuurd waarmee ze hun shawls makkelijk kunnen doorrekenen, zodat ze snel ze aan de slag kunnen.
The workshops Estonian Lace are a big success. Last Saturday we taught the Belgian students in ‘t Wolwinkeltje in Leuven how to knit a mini shawl. The next day we repeated this workshop in De Afstap in Amsterdam. With blood, sweat and tears (from laughing by the way), the students managed to produce a mini shawl in both workshops. So now they are able to knit their own lace shawl. The responses were very positive and despite the fact that they were very tired, all of them went home proud and enthusiastic. We quickly sent them our Excel-spreadsheet that enables them to calculate their shawls very easily so that they can start one immediately.

When you’re too late to enter, contact the location and perhaps they can place you on a waiting list for the beginning of 2010. “Breien is écht geen vies woord meer”, zei iemand verleden week tegen me terwijl we gezellig samen naar ons wekelijks Stitch ‘n Bitch-avondje liepen. Het gaat góed met het breien. Het mag al jaren weer, maar blijkbaar krijgt het sinds het aanbreken van de herfst ook echt status.
“Knitting isn’t a dirty word anymore”, someone told me last week when we walked together to our weekly Stitch ‘n Bitch night. Knitting is getting more and more popular. It is ‘allowed’ to knit for some years, but obviously it even is cool to knit since the beginning of autumn.
Ik fotografeerde eind oktober in Parijs al wat mooie etalages met breisels, maar de Utrechtse middenstand kan er ook wat van. Grote winkelketens als Sissy Boy, Mexx en Vera Moda nemen breien serieus. De etalages puilen uit van de breigerelateerde items en er worden gebreide etalagematerialen en bollen wol gebruikt om de wintermode aantrekkelijk te maken voor een groot publiek, vaak in combi met kreten die op de ramen geschilderd waren waar het woord ‘knit’ in voorkwam. Voor wie het nog niet door had……
At the end of October I already made some photos of beautiful window displays with knitwear in Paris, but the merchants in Utrecht also fill up their shops with it. Big chains like Sissy Boy, Mexx and Vera Moda take knitting serieusly. The windows displays are stuffed with knitting related items and there are even knitted props and balls of wool used to make the winter collection more appealing to the public, often in combination with text on the windows containing the word ‘knit’. Just in case anybody didn’t notice it that knitting is cool again……
