Tijdens de Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam in 2009 viel een blond meisje met een schattig Delfts blauw baretje behoorlijk op. Haar moeder Jolijn had de baret gebreid. “Waarom schrijf je daar niet een boek over?”, was onze vraag dus dat deed ze toen maar. Een jaar later zit ze gezellig met dochter en man naast ons bij het Dutch Knitting Café. Goed hè, van Jolijn.
During the Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam in 2009 a blond girl with a cute Delfts blue baret caught our eye. Her mother Jolijn had knitted it. “Why not write a book about this?”, was our question, so that was what she did. A year later we are sitting next to each other in The Dutch Knitting Café. Good for you Jolijn!
Het boekje is lekker praktisch. Er staan basispatronen in in twee maten, waar alle patronen naar verwijzen. Als je er één hebt gebreid, is de rest een eitje. Mijn favoriet is de baret met rode hartjes. Ik heb er al garen (Aslan Trends Sante Fe) voor gehaald in wolwit en rood. Nu nog snel breien voor het buiten kouder wordt.
The booklet is very practical. There are basic patterns in two sizes on which all patterns are based. When you knitted one baret, knitting other models is just easy. My favorite is the baret with the red hearts. The yarn I choose in wool white and red (Aslan Trends Sante Fe) is already there. Now let’s knit before it get’s colder.
Gelukkig had ik al snel een exemplaar bemachtigd, want Jolijn verkocht zo goed dat al na de eerste dag manlief naar uitgever Forte kon rijden om nog een paar dozen op te halen. Zondagmiddag waren ook die al weer op. Wie op de beurs geen boekje meer kon bemachtigen, kan je het boekje kopen of bestellen bij de Afstap voor maar 9,95 euro. Mijn boekje werd natuurlijk gesigneerd door de trotse auteur. Complimenten voor Jolijn en veel succes met Baretten Breien!
Luckily I got my copy right away, as Jolijn sold so well that after the first day her dear husband could drive to the publishing house Forte to get a few more boxes. Sunday afternoon those were sold too. Those that couldn’t buy a copy at the fair, you can buy the booklet at de Afstap for only 9,95 euros. My booklet was signed by the auther of course. Compliments for Jolijn and success with Baretten Breien!
De mensen, maar ook de hondjes, in Boedapest hadden het fris. Jan en ik waren een lang weekend in deze sprookjesachtig mooie stad, even een romantische uitje omdat we toch allebei vijf dagen geen verplichtingen hadden. Het oorspronkelijk plan Parijs werd geannuleerd en Boedapest geboekt, want wie flexibel is, kan zomaar opeens in Hongarije zitten.
The people, but also the dogs, in Budapest were a bit chilly. Jan and I were there for a long weekend in this city that could come straight from a fairytale book. We didn’t have any commitments for five days, so, why not do a romantisch trip. The original idea was to go to Paris and Budapest was booked. Those that are flexible can suddenly be in Hungary.
Nauwgesloten, net op de taille vallend, lekker tuttig en goed wasbaar. Dat waren een paar van de eisen die werden gesteld aan de truien, spencers en vesten die er moesten komen om de acteurs voor de musical Soldaat van Oranje te kleden. Catherine, één van de kleedsters vroeg mij mee te denken over hoe we dat het best konden aanpakken. Ik kwam met ideeën, patronen en praktische tips. Na een ochtend overleg tussen de rekken kleding in hun gigantische kledingmagazijn resulteerde dat in een stapel opdrachten voor de breiers van De Afstap in Amsterdam.
Close fitted, exactly on the waistline, frumpy and very washable. Those were a few of the requirements for the jumpers, vests and cardigans that had to be made to dress the actors of the musical Soldaat van Oranje. Catherine, one of the dressers asked me to think along with her about how to tackle this. I suggested ideas, patterns and practical tips. After a morning of discussion among the racks of clothing in their gigantic clothing depot this resulted in a stack of commissions for the knitters of De Afstap in Amsterdam.
Zondagavond zagen man Jan en ik het resultaat in levende lijve. In de hangaar van vliegveld Valkenburg bij Katwijk woonden we als genodigden een prachtige musical met vrolijke en droevige momenten bij, maar vooral met ontzettend mooie kleding. Natuurlijk kregen de truien mijn meeste aandacht. Jee, wat hebben onze Afstap-breiers het goed gedaan! Met sokkengaren op dunne breinaaldjes breiden ze ruim binnen de deadline een stapel van bijna tien stuks bij elkaar, plus een paar sokken. Petje af dames, goed gedaan!
Sunday evening husband Jan and I saw the result in person. In the hangar of Valkenburg Airport near Katwijk we were invited to see this beautiful musical with all its cheerful and sad moments, but especially with its fabulous clothing. Of course my attention was directed foremost at the jumpers. Wow, what a fantastic job our Afstap knitters did! With sock yarn on small needles they knitted a stack of almost ten pieces well within the deadline, plus a pair of socks. Our compliments ladies, well done!
Geen foto’s, dat was streng verboden tijdens de try-out, maar wel wat beelden van de boeken die dienden als inspiratie en de patronen die werden gebruikt voor de modellen. Sommige modellen komen uit Engelse boekjes en uit een decennia voor de jaren veertig, maar de mode veranderde toen minder snel en was stabieler dan nu. Zeker gedurende de schrale oorlogsjaren. Sokkenwol bleek perfect voor de meeste modellen, de juiste dikte, kleuren en goed wasbaar. Dat mag ook wel, want de sets veranderen doorlopend, men valt in het water en sjeest op motoren rond het toneel dat uit verschillende delen bestaat. Het moet tegen een stootje kunnen en dat kan Regia sokkenwol als de beste.
No photos, that was strictly forbidden during the try-out, but I do have some images of books that were used as inspiration and the patterns that were used for the designs. Some designs come from English books and one from an earlier decade than the forties, but in those days fashion did not change as fast and was more stable than nowadays. This was especially the case in the poor war years. Sock yarn appeared to be perfect for most designs, the right gauge, colours and it is very washable. And that was an important condition, for the sets change all the time, people fall into the water and drive around on motorbikes on the stage that is made up of different parts. It must be strong and that is what Regia sock yarn is.
Het toneel bestaat uit een hoofdtoneel met diverse zijtonelen. De gasten in de zaal draaien tijdens een prachtige multimediashow rond zodat er steeds een perfecte blik op het toneel is. In één van de laatste scenes draait de zaal 180 graden om z’n as, de deuren van de hangaar schuiven open, koude avondlucht stroomt binnen. Voor de ingang wordt een Dakota voorgereden, Wilhelmina in haar enorme sjuup stapt uit en jij als toeschouwer waant je in de wereld van 5 mei 1945. Maar ik keek het meest naar de leuke groene gebreide baret van één van de vrouwen. Wat leuk om hieraan een kleine bijdrage te hebben mogen leveren, dank je wel Catherine!
The stage consists of a main stage with several side stages. The audience is seated in a hall that turns during the fantastic multi-media show in order to give them a perfect view of the stage. In one of the last scenes the audience rotates 180 degrees on its axis, the doors of the hangar open and the cold night air streams in. A Dakota is driven up to the entrance, Wilhelmina gets out in her gigantic dress and the audience imagines itself in the world of 5 May 1945. But I was mainly interested in the green beret worn by one of the women. It was fun to have had the chance to make a small contribution to this musical, thank you Catherine!
Je verstand staat erbij stil. Een commerciëel bedrijf dat je belt met de vraag of je patronen wilt ontwerpen voor ze. “Wat schuift het?”, is dan een voor de hand liggende vraag, toch? Maar men denkt blijkbaar dat breiers hun garens zelf niet kunnen betalen en de enige vergoeding blijkt de piepacryl voor de te ontwerpen mutsen te zijn. Nee, gaan we dus niet doen……
Okay, of we dan wat patronen uit bestaande breiboeken voor ze kunnen scannen, dan kunnen ze die op hun site zetten. Copyright? Daar hebben ze bij dit bedrijf blijkbaar nog nooit van gehoord.
This is beyond me. A commercial company phones you with the request to design some patterns for them. “What does it shell out?” is the obvious question, isn’t it? But apparently they think that knitters cannot afford their own yarns and the only fee appears to be the squeaky acrylic for the hats that will have to be designed. No thanks, we’re not going to do that……
Okay, so can’t we just scan some pattern from the knitting books we have, so they can put them on their website. Copyright? Apparently this company has never heard of this before.
Voor hun brei-eventje hebben ze een jong en flitsend publiek voor ogen. De gastvrouwen voor het event, die via een uitzendbureau worden geworven, mogen niet ouder zijn dan 55 jaar. Gaandeweg wordt deze grens nog eens pittig verlaagd naar 45 en vervolgens zelfs naar 40 jaar. Op Ravelry en binnen de breigroepen gonst het van de verontwaardiging. Breien is voor iedereen en alle leeftijden.
En ik? Ik ben alleen maar benieuwd hoe ze dit initiatief tot het succes gaan maken dat ze voor hun piepjonge oogjes hebben.
For their little knitting event they aim at a young and trendy public. The hosts for the event, who are recruited through a temp agency, are to be not older than 55. Along the way the age limit is lowered to 45 and then even to 40. On Ravelry and within the knitting groups there’s general indignation. Knitting is for everyone and for all ages.
And I? I’m just curious how they will make this initiative that they have their very young eyes on a success.
Dit was alweer het vierde jaar dat we het Dutch Knitting Cafe organiseerde tijdens IKnit Weekender in Londen. Wat komen we toch graag ieder jaar in Londen naar dit fantastisch leuke event. Dit keer kregen we een prachtig plekkie vlak bij het podium waardoor we midden in de actie zaten en breiers lekker even mee konden breien. En naast Eirwen van de KnitWitches met al haar verleidelijke garens. Ze verkocht zo goed dat ze aan het eind van de beurs de bedragen wilde aanslaan op haar weegschaal. Gerard kreeg als dank voor de organisatie van ons jaarlijks breifeest de plastic tulpen uit het café, waar ook Eirwen zo weg van was we er haar ook maar eentje toegeschoven hebben.
This was the fourth time we organized the Dutch Knitting Café during the IKnit Weekender in London. How glad we are to participate in this fantastic event every year. This year we had a splendid spot close to the stage, so we were placed in the centre of the action and knitters could easily join us for a few rows of knitting. And we were right next to Eirwen of the Knitwitches with all her alluring yarns. She sold so well that she wanted to strike the amounts on the scales instead of on the till. As a thank you for organising our yearly knitting party we gave him the plastic tulips from the cafe. Eirwen loved them too so much that we had to give her one too.
Habu was er ook, helemaal vanuit New York. En Wooly Thoughts, met mysterieuze schaduwbreisels, EasyKnits, dit keer bijgestaan door Marleen van Dutch Knitting Designs, Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Shop en nog veel meer handelaren met een assortiment voor de echte yarnsnob. Bij Coleman kocht ik onder andere een breischede, waar je lopend mee zou moeten kunnen breien. De Shetlanders haalden er 200 steken per minuut mee. Zeggen ze. Dat belooft wat. Ik zal jullie verslag doen van mijn experimenten met dit intrigerende attribuut.
Habu was present as well, all the way from New York. And Wooly Thoughts, with mysterious shadow knitting, EasyKnits, assisted by Marleen from Dutch Knitting Designs this time, Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Shop and many more traders with an assortment of yarns for the real yarn snob. At Coleman I bought, among other things, a knitting sheath, with which you should be able to walk and knit at the same time. The Shetlanders made up to 200 stitches a minute with it. So they say. That’s promising. I’ll report you on my findings with this intriguing object.
Vrijdag na afloop van de beurs nodigde organisator Gerard ons uit om mee te komen borrelen in de Engelse pub The Barley Mow. Gewéldig, daar zit je dan samen aan een gigantische beer na te genieten van een geweldige dag. Corry wilde niet op de foto, maar haar kabouter gelukkig wel. Die kabouter was ook getuige van het drankgelag van Titia tijdens het Indiase dineetje, traditiegetrouw bij Masala Zone in Covent Garden.
Friday after the fair organizer Gerard invited us to the pub for a drink. It was fabulous, being together and enjoying a gigantic glass of beer after a fantastic day. Corry didn’t want her picture taken, but fortunately her gnome did. The gnome also witnessed Titia’s drinking bout while we had an Indian diner, according to tradition at Masala Zone at Covent Garden.
De laatste weken waren een marathon van uitjes voor mij, eerst zes dagen naar Londen, daarna één dagje thuis en hup, het vliegtuig weer in voor acht dagen Rome met man Jan. Wat een geweldige stad; cultuur, kunst, historie, zalig eten en heerlijke wijn en vooral romantiek, want Rome is een stad om lief te hebben. Natuurlijk hield ik mijn ogen open voor alles wat met breien te maken heeft, maar later daarover meer.
The last few weeks were a marathon of trips for me, first six days to London, then one day at home and off I went by plane again to Rome with my husband Jan. What a fantastic city Rome is; there is art, culture, history, delicious food and wine and above all romance, because Rome is a city to love. Of course I kept my eyes open for all knitting related things, but more about that later.
Het najaar brengt in Nederland gelukkig weer volop leuke activiteiten. Onze Dutch Knitter’s workshops zijn weer gestart en maandag beginnen we bij de Afstap in Amsterdam met Het Betere Breiwerk. Op do 14, vr 15 en za 16 oktober wordt in Ahoy in Rotterdam weer de Handwerkbeurs gehouden. Drie dagen lang tussen de wol, vrienden ontmoeten, leuke dingen kopen, workshops doen en natuurlijk lekker even in het Dutch Knitting Café zitten. Ik heb er al zin in!
Fortunately fall brings lots of fun activities in The Netherlands as well. Our Dutch Knitter’s workshops have started again and coming Monday we will start Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting Course) at the Afstap in Amsterdam. On Thursday 14, Friday 15 and Saturday 16 October the Handwerkbeurs will be held again in Ahoy in Rotterdam. Three days amidst yarn, meeting friends, doing workshops and of course sitting relaxed in the Dutch Knitting Café. Looking forward to it already!

Astrid’s Dutch Obsessions verkoopt sinds kort de nieuwe garens en de breiers van het Dutch Knitting Café gebruiken het onder meer voor de Kika berendassen tijdens de Handwerkbeurs. Ook de Amerikaanse ontwerpster Nicky Epstein, bekend van de randjes en kreatieve afwerkingen voor breiwerk, heeft de mooie garens ontdekt. Op vrijdag 15 oktober 2010 geeft ze een lezing Designing with Nicky Epstein voor circa 70 bezoekers (ongeveer 2-2,5 uur). De prijs inclusief toegangskaart voor de beurs is € 39,50 . Deelnemers worden verzocht wol en breinaalden mee te nemen! Aanmelden kan via e-mail of telefonisch op 038-4650059. Er zijn nog plaatsen beschikbaar! Aslan Trends is a new star in the yarn firmament. Breien en een voorliefde voor supergave schoenen met hakken waar je hoogtevrees op krijgt, gaan blijkbaar samen. In ieder geval wel bij Alice Starmore die in haar mooie paarse vestje tegenover ons Dutch Knitting Café haar heruitgave Aran Knitting signeerde. Het boek, dat tot voor kort voor circa 400 dollar via Ebay werd verhandeld en waar Hilly en ik via de site van The Dutch Knitters een handtekeningenactie voor opzette om het herdrukt te krijgen, is in één woord geweldig. Maar Alice’s schoenen waren dat ook!
Het boek was nu al te verkrijgen bij IKnit op de IKnit Weekender, maar binnenkort ook bij de wolwinkels, boekhandels en via het internet.

Knitting and a predilection for super cool shoes with heels that give you fear of heights, obviously go together. It obviously does for Alice Starmorewho did a book signing of her book Aran Knitting just across our Dutch Knitting Café, wearing her beautiful purple cardigan. The book that up until now was traded for about 400 dollars at Ebay and for which Hilly and I started a campaign to get it reprinted, is in one word fantastic. But Alice’s shoes are as well!
The book could be obtained already at the IKnit stand at IKnit Weekender, but will soon also be available at yarn shops, bookshops and through the internet.

Wat was het weer leuk! Voor de vierde keer was ik met een flink stel breivrienden aanwezig op de IKnit Weekender in Londen met een Dutch Knitting Café. Ik gaf er workshops Double Knitting en Estonian Lace, hebben me suf gekocht aan boeken, garen en breispullen, veel oude vrienden ontmoet en het ook buiten de beursdagen geweldig leuk gehad met onze vrienden. En een bijziende kabouter die alsmaar opdook. Titia was er ook weer bij, ook over haar en haar liefde voor een lekker glaasje later meer.
Verslagen en foto’s volgen nog, maar even geduld, want ik moet eerst nog iets anders doen. Gerard en de medewerkers van IKnit, bedankt voor een superleuk weekend!
What fun we had! For the fourth time a bunch of knitting friends and I where present with a Dutch Knitting Café at the IKnit Weekender in London. I gave workshops Double Knitting and Estonian Lace, I overindulged in buying books, yarn and knitting gadgets, met many old friends and had a fantastic time not only at the fair but also outside it with our friends. And there was a short-sighted gnome that emerged all the time. Titia was with us again, more about her and how she loves a nice drink later as well.

Daar gá ik…… twee dagen voordat de meeste van mijn breivrienden arriveren, vlieg ik naar Londen. De eerste twee dagen zal ik doorbrengen met shoppen, het bezoeken van wolwinkels en het Victoria & Albert Museum met een expositievan de kleding van princess Grace en lekker van de stad genieten. Vrijdag en zaterdag geven Hilly en ik workshops en samen met onze breivrienden zullen we weer een gezellig Dutch Knitting Cafe organiseren tijdens de IKnit Weekender. Met de onvermijdelijke stroopwafels natuurlijk. Kom vooral een wafeltje met ons meesnoepen!
Off I go…… two days before most of my knitting friends will arrive I will take an flight to London. First two days of shopping, visiting yarn shops, the Victoria & Albert Museam with a exposition of the clothes of princess Graceand enjoying the city. Friday and Saturday Hilly and I will give workshops and together with our friends we will organize the Dutch Knitting Cafe at the IKnit Weekender. With unevitable stroopwafels of course. Don’t forget to come over and munch one away!
